Another entrant in the Ugly and/or Bizarre Jane Austen Novel Cover Archives
Alert Janeite Lisa A. found this Persuasion cover on Flickr. This falls into both the ugly AND bizarre categories, we think.
ETA: We heard from the artist who made the “cover,” and he said it is a joke, and we think rather a good parody on some of the hilariously horrifying REAL covers we’ve seen! To wit:
Captain Wentworth for Old Spice
Primary Colored Gowns: All the Rage in Regency England
Return to Northanger Abbey: the 25th Anniversary Reunion Special

Wow…I wouldn’t want that on my bookshelf!

The synopsis ist especially dumb. Sounds like a good approach for a movie, though. (/snark)

Is she ‘waxing’ her legs??? What cover! How horrible!
September 10th, 2007 at 7:17 am
revealing a leg?! how rude! And the synopsis- well, really gives a feeling for the intelligence and elegance of the novel, don’t you think?
Okay, enough sarcasm; bright pink and sick-yellow? Nice. (darn it there’s the sarcasm again!)

I luved the reference to Capt. W’s twisted preference for teenaged girls! Whoever wrote this has quite a sense of humor.

W. T. F. ??????????????????

Perhaps the artist was thinking of Anne Bancroft?
“Koo-koo-ka-choo, Miss Anne Elliot/Wentworth loves you more than you will know … “

What????
Why is it that Persuasion attracts bad cover artists?
*goes to cry in a corner*

oh god, who is the graphic designer who put yellow on bright pink???

YIKES!!!!

Hmmmm. Okay, maybe the existence of Photoshop has made me overly suspicious, but I can’t help wondering if perhaps this is not a REAL book cover.

At least, I’m hoping…

Poor Captain Wentworth! To have him depicted as being some sort of creep with an almost perverted interest in young girls is just too much!

Wondered why so many people were looking at my pic and found this link.I’m not an artist - I just wasted an hour knocking up a spoof Persuasion cover for my own twisted amusement. It was meant to be as lurid as possible. Personally, I think my worst misdeed was to crop an excellent sketch by Goya, who also happened to be a genius.

Hi Wally! Thanks for dropping by with an explanation. We’re not normally humorless around here, and now that I understand what it is I find it rather funny. But if you’ve seen what we’ve seen in the Bad Jane Austen Book Covers category, you would understand our reaction! (And I think you did an excellent job spoofing them!)
