The dangers of spoilage

Filed under: Pride and Prejudice (2005) — Mags @ 12:02 am

We were amused by an article in the LAist from someone who was spoiled not wisely but too well before her viewing of P&P3…

But there was one line in her review that stuck with us throughout the entire movie:

The film’s single false note comes in a post-wedding scene on a balcony at Pemberley Hall that’s unfortunately reminiscent of “Sixteen Candles.”

And unfortunately, since we’re big fans of Sixteen Candles and the other Brat Pack-era films like The Outsiders, St. Elmo’s Fire, The Breakfast Club, et al, it was hard to wipe away that image of Molly Ringwald’s Samantha and her beau, Jake, sitting cross-legged oogling each other across a lit birthday cake. When we watched the denouement in Pride and Prejudice, all of a sudden we could hear Long Duk Dong across the English moors…

Now, there’s a new take on the UnAusten Coda: Imagine half-dressed Darcy, the worse for a couple of bottles of claret, chasing Lizzy around saying, “Oh sexy girlllllllfriennnnnnd…”

*laughing* Oh, no….this time you really spoiled it for me. LOL. That’s too graphic an image to shake off! Oh, God.

Oh my god, I just watched Pride and Prejudice last night and the last scene struck a chord in me, but never, never, did I spot its similarity to the last scene in Sixteen Candles! I feel tarnished! That reviewer is spot on. I cannot imagine rewatching Pride and Prejudice later on DVD without this opinion now. I don’t know whether to groan or cry.

I can just see the Nerd and his covey of wannabes checking out Dong’s pursuit.

ROFLOL!!! I love Sixteen Candles, and the comparison will now be forever burned in my brain. I can just see Wickham charging his buds for a peek at Lydia’s pantaloons.

  4. Mags Says:

Well, if it was REALLY Sixteen Candles, Lizzy would have ended up with Farmer Ted. So there you go.

Mags, when I read this I was bowled over laughing, literally. I have not laughed that hard in a while. “Oh sexy girlllllllfriennnnnnd…” is hillarious and the worst part is I can totally see someone coming out with a teen movie remake of pride and prejudice whith a Long Duk Dong character playing Mr. Collins.

    Ewww!!
I liked Sixteen Candles too but… You can’t compare Pride and Pejudice to an ’80’s teen flick.
    That’s just gross!

    Stilton, anyone?

Apparently the UK ladies who demanded the “cheesy” ending are going to get it!
