New PRIDE AND PREJUDICE set photos

Filed under: Pride and Prejudice (2005) — Mags @ 4:53 pm

Julie B. sends us a link to some photos from the PRIDE AND PREJUDICE set, including new photos of Judi Dench and Keira Knightley as well as some others of Keira and Matthew Macfadyen that we have already seen (but most of our visitors will not mind looking at them again, we are certain). Click on the word “Nasta” to get the next photo in the set.

Thanks, Julie!

Well, I’ve been trying valiantly to refrain from forming an opinion about this new P&P in general and KK in particular, but my struggles have been in vain. My feelings will not be repressed! ;-) Unfortunately, my feelings are not those of ardent admiration. The more pictures I see from this set, the more I wonder what in heaven’s name the people in charge of this film are thinking. I truly hope that KK makes a great Lizzy, (although I must admit I have my doubts), but what is with her clothes? Or her hair?! She has the wretched “unblooming Anne” style from Persuasion. She looks more like Mary (Bennet) than Lizzy!

I wonder if they are going to portray the Bennets as being far less wealthy than they are. I read somewhere (can’t remember where) a description made by someone affiliated with this movie of the Bennets having “fallen on hard times” or some such nonsense. Do these people even read the book more than once?

  2. Mags Says:

Apparently the Bennets are too poor to afford an iron. *meow*

The cast is very good; I just love Judi Dench and Matthew Macfadyen, so I’m looking forward to seeing the film. I assume the film will paint the story in very broad strokes because of the length required to fit into a two-hour film.

I will say, as a history geek who loves good period costuming and details, I am disappointed in the young women’s dresses we’ve seen so far.

  3. Julie B. Says:

It’s the hair that gets me the most.

I’ve told myself that perhaps in the 1790’s dresses were darker, and yes, linen wrinkles very easily. But, but, but. Her hair is just awful. I can’t imagine what in the world they are thinking, except to drive home the fact that Deprived!Lizzy can’t afford a maid, and must content herself with two minutes in front of a cracked mirror and a handful of pins.

  4. Mags Says:

Yes, again it’s that Hollywood visual shorthand they must employ to fit the story into two hours. They must make choices. It remains to see if we agree with their choices.

As much as I love PERSUASION, I hate how they changed Mr. Elliot’s story for the sake of expedience. That’s the one thing I’d change about that movie. But I still love, love, love the film. Of course all the costumes are just perfect, though. ;-) And it makes sense for Anne to be pale and droopy in the beginning, as long as she’s lovely and blooming at the end.

  5. Mary Says:

I agree with Julie. The hair is just awful. If they really are supposed to be that poor, wouldn’t the sisters help one another out and fix eachother’s hair??

  6. Robyn Says:

I would like to say I agree with all of you but at this moment I cannot. I would like to see how Jenna Malone and Rosamund Pike look before I set my decision. From the book i was always under the impression that Jane and Lydia concerned themselves more with their appearance. So if they have the perfect hair and beautiful clothes that are spotless and always pressed I might be more inclined to like this adaptation. Finally Mags Matthew McFayden is a wonderful actor who i saw first in the Way We Live Now, i think he will make an excellent Mr. Darcy. So far at least the supporting cast is excellent. If the crew is as determined to create a masterpiece worthy of Austen which i think they would like to do, I think that this film is in good hands. After all this studio-Working Title-produced Elizabeth and Billy Elliot two wonderful films I dont think that any of their British Films are going to be that horrible.
