A Reminder: The Jane Austen Survey Ends Soon!
If you have not already taken the 2008 Jane Austen Survey, please do so before the deadline, June 30.
As a reminder (or for those new to the blog), the survey is being taken by an experienced survey research consultant, Jeanne Kiefer, who will be presenting her results at the JASNA AGM in Chicago this October. (By the way, registration is open for the AGM and filling up fast!) To be eligible to participate, you must have read Jane Austen’s six major novels and consider yourself a sincere Jane Austen fan. The survey will take about 15 minutes to complete.
Some tidbits from the results so far:

- 200 respondents aged 70+
- 10 consider Elizabeth Bennet their least-favorite heroine
- 72% do not belong to JASNA
- Least-visited region (of those listed): India

From those bulleted lists above, “we” sound like a stodgy bunch of grannies. Hope the younger generation will take a few minutes to reply and improve the demographics.

I’m the survey administrator and want to correct any impression that all participants are in their dotage. In fact, a great many students have taken the survey, as have doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. However, the wide variety of careers pursued by respondents is quite amazing — those examples were provided just to give you a hint of the Janeite diversity showing up in the survey results.

I find the few tidbits mentioned to be absolutely fasciating! I’m sure the overall results will be even more interesting!

Can’t wait to see the results myself. Had a great time filling in the questionnaire. I’d hoped I’d be one of the people who she sent the additional questionnaire supplement to, but I wasn’t…
*sighs*

I can’t see stodgy old grannies being theme park managers, horse trainers, diplomats, security guards, etc., Deb R.
Very interesting results. I was one of the students who took the survey, so I’ll be interested to hear more age stats.

Trust me. All grannies aren’t stodgy. Tsk, tsk. Jane Austen wouldn’t have been so prejudiced. In fact, I’ll bet if she had lived to 70, she would have been quite the opposite!
