iJane Conference in Rochester, New York

Filed under: Austen Societies and Events — Mags @ 8:25 pm

We mentioned this in Getting Local a week or so ago, but a couple of people have asked about it so we’re making a separate post.

JASNA’s Rochester and Syracuse Regions are hosting a Super Regional Conference, “iJane: Jane Austen in the Information Age” this Saturday, May 3, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gleason Auditorium, Central Library, Rochester, NY. Tickets are a very affordable $27 for JASNA members and $32 for non-members, and includes lunch from Simply Crepes. The speakers include Myretta Robens from the Republic of Pemberley and your humble servant. We’re very excited about it and hope to meet some AustenBlog readers there. Click the link above for the registration form–they’re due by Monday, but we’ll see if something can’t be worked out if anyone still wants to attend.

The next day, Sunday, May 4, from 2-5 p.m., the second annual Jane Austen Ball will be held at the Cutler Union Ballroom at the Memorial Art Gallery on University Avenue. If you’re unsure of your English Country Dancing skills, there is a practice session at 10 a.m.

If you speak the way you write, Mags, the Conference sounds like it will be GREAT! I wish I could be there.

I am another wishing I could be there. I hope you can tell us how it went, Mags, please.

What pleasant company AND an opportunity to hear about JA & technology. Mags gave an informative talk about blogs and how they work for JA-related news, and then gave a short history of how she started Austenblog. She also talked about the types of items posted here, though technical glitches prevented her from showing the attendees any examples of LOL-cats. :-)

In discussing how changes in technology affect the manner in which we experience JA’s books, Mags had some hand-held examples. I was very impressed when she demonstrated having Persuasion downloaded on three different devices (cell phones and something like the kindle — sorry, I forget the name of it!).

She also discussed the Goucher College JA collection, including those items which have been scanned onto the web. (See this Austenblog post for the link.)

I was pleased to meet Mags before the seminar began, and I enjoyed having dinner with her (and four other attendees) afterward.
