Preview of Miss Austen Regrets on Masterpiece site

Filed under: Miss Austen Regrets — Mags @ 5:30 pm

Masterpiece has at last launched its new website, and it includes a preview of Miss Austen Regrets, and it’s a corker.

Jane natters on about Tom Lefroy to Fanny Knight (and gosh that actress looks like Kate Winslet).

Fanny: Was he the one?

(pregnant pause)

Jane: No.

Editrix: *stands and cheers*

ETA: Thanks to several Alert Janeites who sent us this news!

    Me too!!! :D

As an Austen enthusiast, but not a bona fide Janeite (not enough Austen knowledge and expertise to consider myself a bona fide Janeite, plus I’m far to far from a purist when it comes to Austen adaptations), this clip looks very promising in my eyes. The tone, the dialogue, Olivia Williams as Austen…whether it totally delivers or not - which it probably won’t and what does anyway - it certainly looks to have a potential that Becoming Jane could never even conceive of.

  3. Giselle Says:

Thanks for posting this! I had been looking at a little different version/layout of the Masterpiece website: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/austen/index.html

Very much looking forward to this!! :-)

  4. Cinthia Says:

PS, I forgot to mention, according to the PBS site, Miss Austen Regrets will be included in the S&S3 DVD.

  5. Mags Says:

I posted that hastily on my way out the door to the grocery store. Naturally MAR will be a Made Up Story like Becoming Jane, but that does not necessarily mean that it will be a bad Made Up Story. It remains to be seen, of course, how good it is, but this is promising indeed! I liked Jane crying, “That was SATIRE!” I know how she feels. Geez.

  6. Laura Says:

isn’t olivia williams lady russell from the 2007 version of persuasion?

  7. Laura Says:

NEVER MIND. i should’ve done my research first. i just knew i’d seen her somewhere…and i had. she was mrs. darling in peter pan. she also played agatha christie…who also has plenty of wit and humour, in my opinion…

  8. Cinthia Says:

And she is Jane Fairfax in E3.

  9. Cinthia Says:

PS - the new Lady Rusell is Alice Krige.

  10. Beth Says:

Thank you for mentioning this preview. It looks splendid.

  11. Maria Says:

Thanks for posting this! It does look promising, doesn’t it?

It hurt for about five minutes and then it passed.

No comment. *Yes! Becoming Jane, eat your heart out!*

Fanny sounds like the typical brat.

  12. Julia Says:

This looks WAY better than “Becoming Jane” which is not saying much though. I like Olivia Williams as Jane Austen. Fanny speaks a bit too disrespectful in my view. From the letters I got the impression that she was rather glad to hear her aunt’s opinion and actually sought it. Here it looks like it’s been forced on her.

Well, we’ll see. It looks definitely promising.

  13. Effy Says:

I think it is nice for the US viewers to get a full loading of Austen, but I am sorry that they do not get Best of bread in all adaptions. How about we make a selection our self of the best Austen canon. My own choices woould be:

S&S the 1995 film( the 1970 version a clear second)
P&P the 2005 film (close call)
Emma the 1996 film (more lively and charming than the tv version of the same
year. the 1971 not a bad job either)
    Persuasion the 1994 (root version)
NA the 1992 version (a close call, but so much more Bath)
MP An impossible choice ( i am almost voting for the film version, cannot wote for the new version which omit Portmouth and the ball)

Wild card: Clueless and Bride & Prejudice inpired films

    What are your choices

  14. Mags Says:

Hi Effy, the thing is that WGBH (the sponsor of Masterpiece) helped finance the new adaptations–that’s why they’re showing those rather than other versions. But it would be fun if each fan could pick and choose their favorites. I’d pick Wishbone NA, myself. :-)

  15. Chantel Says:

*squee* Ooooo this looks so good! Jane is actually Jane-like!! :D

  16. Chantel Says:

Did you look at the picture slideshows for each film (there isn’t one for MAR)? The third picture for Persuasion and the second last for Mansfield! Persuasion: Louisa takes a flying leap into Wentworth’s arms. Wentworth [looks like he] gets the wind knocked out of him! Mansfield: Maria is popping out like you wouldn’t believe. Holy cow! Definitely unsubtle.

  17. T. Chan Says:

Some info on MAR here: http://missaustenregrets.com/

  18. Jessie Says:

Its airs in the US on 3rd feb, but i really want to see it!
    Thanks.
