Jane on Facebook
Alert Janeite Alisha tells us that Jane Austen has a Facebook. As we don’t have a Facebook (already have enough blog-like things to tend) we can’t check it out, but those of you who do have a Facebook certainly may.

She must have it set to “Friends Only,” because I couldn’t look at her profile. William Cowper is one of her friends, though.

There’s also an Austenfans.com facebook that’s under the name of “Jane Austen”. I never really look at it though.

LOL! I also noticed this some time ago. Must be weird to have Jane Austen as a friend on Facebook!

Our Jane has been busy. She has a My Space page as well!

There are several Jane Austens on Facebook, and several Elizabeth Bennets, several Mr Darcys, Edward Ferrars, and the like. There’s a shockingly lack of Emma Woodhouse and Elinor Dashwood though, and Facebook periodically wanders through and deletes all the fictional characters when it finds them.

I’m picturing several Jasper Fforde characters getting together to protest against this discrimination!

Well, we do have several groups that revolve around the idea of “Save the fictional characters”.
Edward Ferrars has thus far been deleted once, and recreated, his wife Elinor had a similar fate and hasn’t been seen since. Margaret is surviving, but both the Colonel and his wife has been lost.
Lizzy Bennets and Darcys and Jane Austens are lost and found more much frequently.

I made this particular Jane Austen my friend on facebook. Most of the profile is dedicated to convincing everyone that Jane faked her death and is immortal. And the person claims that the Rice portrait really is her, no matter what the experts say. There is a group “she” started with a description that says this:
“I, Jane Austen, have a lot of explaining to do. Just recently I decided to come out of complete seclusion and explain to all my dear friends across the globe that I am immortal. I have also decided it was high time to offer my advice and my unique knowledge to a public disillusioned by modern spectacle and the senseless selfishness of many. Dear readers remember, I have been alive for more than two hundred years, so it is possible that I can put forward the idea that history repeats itself to the point of sadness beyond belief. As well, on a more personal note, I will reveal the inaccuracies of my biographers (who endlessly vex me). In particular, by adding just the appropriate amount of light I will illuminate my childhood, love life, and my so called lost years . My dear friends, please support me in this disclosure of facts. I cannot stand what is being written about me and what is going on around me. A truthful discussion is much needed.
Your Humble Servant,
Jane Austen”
