The Complete Jane Austen to begin on January 13

According to the Masterpiece Theatre newsletter we received today, the first part of the Complete Jane Austen will be broadcast on January 13, 2008. It’s unclear from the e-mail which film will be broadcast first; we suspect the ITV films from last year will be first up. Just a hunch.

Also, if you follow the link above, PBS is having a contest to win a complete set of Jane Austen’s novels.

The schedule can be found here:

Ah, but it *isn’t* a complete SET of Jane Austen’s novels, I found when I clicked: it’s a one-volume paperback containing all the novels. Sounds rather like what Grigg brings to the first meeting of The Jane Austen Book Club — sequels, anyone?

“Colin Firth ***(Bridget Jones)*** is Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle (The Coast of Utopia) is Elizabeth Bennet in the definitive adaptation of the most-loved of all Austen novels.”

Asterisks mine! The guy who played Mark Darcy is now taking on the original Mr. Darcy - come on, that’s hilarious! Bless PBS.

  4. Diane Says:

You’re kidding, right, Jen K? Colin Firth played Mr. Darcy in the 1995 BBC miniseries Pride and Prejudice, which made him very famous, though he’d been acting steadily for 11 years. They are not remaking this for PBS now, they are repeating the 1995 version. Every interview on Colin mentions him as Mr. Darcy, so it’s hard to believe you weren’t aware.

  5. Mags Says:

Yes, she is kidding. She is remarking on how it is funny that they are advertising it as if he became famous as Mark Darcy.

I will add that there are people out there who know him as Mark Darcy and have never seen P&P. I work with some of them. :-)
