Her hair so untidy, so blowsy!

Bethel College, located near South Bend, Indiana, will be staging a production of Pride and Prejudice October 11 - 13, 2007.

The director seems a bit unsure about some of the adaptation’s omissions:

The Bennets have lost two of their daughters. Not to worry, though: Elizabeth Bennet remains the headstrong heroine of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” in Helen Jerome’s adaptation of Austen’s delightful, well-known 1813 novel.

Among other necessary cuts and revisions, Jerome eliminates the roles of Mary and Kitty Bennet, sisters three and four in the family of five girls, in her adaptation, which opens Thursday at Bethel College.

“She’s added in all these other characters, (so) why did she cut two of the daughters?” director Anita Reimer says after noting the adaptation has 26 roles. “There are so many events that are condensed, and locations. We have only three locations in the show, but I think the dialogue is close to what Jane Austen had. There just isn’t as much of it.”

I have to admit I’m not quite sold on Lizzy’s ‘do.

Maybe they didn’t have mirrors back in the early 1800s. I mean, if I were a woman and didn’t have a mirror, I’m sure my hair would look exactly like that. Oh, and they must not have had wash basins and soap so as to be able to wash the hair, as well. How else could it look like that?

I used to do a lot of semipro theater, and the pictures used in reviews and posters are usually taken months before the actual show with none of the real costumes, hair, or make-up. Looking at it, I’d guess that she has short hair and so they put her in a hairpiece. (If you look at it really closely, the curls along her hairline are a slightly different color from the long curls.) The wild curls would then be a way to cover up the back of short hair without getting an expensive wig into a situation where it might be ruined before the show starts. For the real show, my bet is she’ll have a good wig with a good front.

the hair looks like dread locks that have been curled.

Lydia has a point, although I suspect that once again folks are mixing the regency era with the Victorian era. That hairpiece looks like civil war era hair. Regardless, the “do” is scary. Loved Laurel Ann’s description!

    GAH! It’s Barbie Bennett!

  7. Alison Says:

    Ooooh, total frightwig!

  8. Melissa W. Says:

She looks as though she has strayed from a Hammer Studios production. They were always full of lovely girls with ridiculous hair.
