Wait till Mr. Darcy starts whipping the footmen.

This is an excerpt from the film Bedrooms and Hallways (which has been in our Netflix queue forever, and really should be moved up!)

If you think you spotted several Austen film alumni, you are correct: Harriet Walter (Fanny Dashwood in S&S95, though to us she is forever Harriet Vane), Tom Hollander (Mr. Collins in P&P05), and James Purefoy (Tom Bertram in MP99) as Slashy!Darcy. Of course, the gentlemen were yet to make their Austen-film debuts when this film was made. Jennifer Ehle (Lizzy Bennet in P&P95) is in this film, too.

Thanks to Alert Janeite Laurie for sending this!

Spotting Jane

Alert Janeite Kathy spotted a Jane Austen reference in a classic film, and wrote to share it with AustenBlog readers.

I was watching the 1950 movie “Harvey” starring Jimmy Stewart. While he (Jimmy) was innocently waiting in the library as his sister attempted to commit him to the insane asylum, he picked out a volume of Sense and Sensibility from the bookshelves and proceeded to read the first sentence aloud.
