Jane Austen inspires all ages
It’s enough to soften even the Editrix’s tarlike spinster heart. A UK Arts Council poll that asked 6,000 people to name the people who inspired them in the arts. Jane Austen placed on the list for 18-to-25-year-olds, the over-25 list, and the overall list.
On AustenBlog’s side of the pond, students at Colby College in Portland, Maine, took a “civic engagement” class on Jane Austen that included not only studying her work but the culture and history of her time and that culminated in a gala ball for 120 people. Colby College is just a couple hours away from where I live and I so truly wanted to go to that gala ball but among other business I didn’t have a proper dress. I did meet a girl, later that night at a church function, who seemed to be dressed strangely to every eye but mine (her hair was perfect though she didn’t have an actual dress) and we were able to talk extensively about Jane Austen and about the ball.
I’m so sorry for forgetting to report the ball, it quite slipped my mind afterwards. I also only got to see half of the story in my local paper otherwise I would have sent scans along.
