Darcy. Fitzwilliam–er, Will–er, Henry–er, Mark Darcy.

Filed under: Jane in the News — Mags @ 12:06 am

Alert Janeite Lisa spotted something hilarious in a review of Matthew Macfadyen’s latest movie:

“Death at a Funeral” is the story of one family trying to send off their father with a bit of dignity only to do just the opposite. It stars Mathew McFayden (Mark Darcy in the latest reincarnation of “Pride and Prejudice”) and a host of other British actors you have undoubtedly seen before (though you may not know them by name).

MARK Darcy? Wrong movie, but thanks for playing!

P.S. What is the hangup with the poor guy’s name? Fitzwilliam. Fitzwilliam. It’s a perfectly good bloody name. Do not rename him in period pieces unless you wish to incur the wrath of the Editrix. FITZWILLIAM!

Ah, well. At least they didn’t compare Jane Austen to that other famous writing Jane– Jane Bronte! *facepalm*

We all make mistakes like this (I insist on thinking that the character from “The Lovely Bones” is Calvin, not Samuel), but WHY does no one bother checking, when these things are being published?

I’m also reminded of MM’s own version of P&P. In one of the scenes, Kelly Reilly called Charles Bingley “George,” for reasons unknown. And the actor playing Bingley was named Simon. They had to dub over in, in post-production.

  2. Luciana Says:

Come on! The writer haven’t read P&P rigth? He probably just knows that the Bridget Jones caracter were inspired on the first one and thought that the name and the last name were the same. HELLO PEOPLE!Like Elizabeth said above: CHECK IT!

  3. JessG Says:

It shows that they are trying to be clever. Mr Darcy is called MR Darcy. No more, no less.

  4. Julie P. Says:

I hate when I’m reading what seems to be an interesting piece of fanfiction and then WHAM! Elizabeth refers to her husband as “William.” His name is FITZWILLIAM, thankyewverymuch. grrrrrrrrrr…..
