More on Jane Austen Season in the Netherlands
Alert Janeite Aad sent us scans about the Jane Austen season from the NCRV TV guide.
The broadcast dates for the films are:
Persuasion07 - already broadcast on June 3
Northanger Abbey 07 - to be shown on June 10
Emma 95 (Kate Beckinsale) - to be shown on June 17
Aad wrote to NCRV to find out why Mansfield Park would not be included in the festival and they said it was probably due to legal issues and licensing. Also, unfortunately they are not planning to release DVDs (the rights are owned by the company Dutch Film Works).
We hope our Dutch readers will let us know how they like the films!
However, Aad said that P&P40 is available with Dutch subtitles!

Oooh!!! I didn’t know that P&P1940 is available in the Netherlands! Thanks SO much for mentioning it. I’ve never seen it completely, but the parts I have seen looked funny and sweet. Can’t wait to see it!
I have already given my opinion about the adaptations a looong time ago and already discussed it endlessly here, so I won’t annoy anyone by telling that all that again.
But like Mags I love to know what other Dutchies are thinking.

Though I’m not a ‘Dutchie’
but a Belgian
I’ll give my opinion of Persuasion. First of all I must say that I hadn’t read the book before I saw it, so I don’t know if they’ve followed it while filming. And secondly, I already had seen Fingersmith starring Sally Hawkins as well and I really thought she had done a good job playing Sue.
Mary and the rest of the Eliot family were rather weird persons, but I did like Charles Musgrove. The music they used was really nice, especially in the runningscene with Anne, it just seemed perfect! To put it in short, I loved it very much. Yesterday I started reading Persuasion, but as I have exams right now, I’d better study instead of reading…
But now on Persuasion… Both Anne and Captain Wentworth were performed rather well, though Wentworth had not that much to say (but I’m getting used to those tormented austenmen like darcy etc.

Not everything can be squeezed into the time allotted for a film and with that in mind, I liked it. There were of course oddities: the Elliots were over the top for instance, but I suppose if you have only a few minutes to portray them, you don’t pick their best moments. The constancy conversation occurred at a different moment, which makes the letter come after the cancelled chapters conversation. I didn’t mind the running so much, but it did seem as if towards the end of the film they were running out of time, so that scenes and explanations seemed rushed. “Oops! We only have 5 minutes left and Mr Elliot is still a good guy. What to do?” But luckily most people would have considered Mr Elliot an annoying pop-up and they wouldn’t have cared if his dismissal was explained or not, as long as he disappeared.
