A Jane Austen festival in the Netherlands

Filed under: Northanger Abbey 2007, Persuasion 2007, Screen — Mags @ 5:18 am

Alert Janeite Franka let us know that the Dutch television network NCRV will be showing three Austen films in June. Franka says that the festival is in honor of the 190th anniversary of Jane’s death; we agree with her that it is an odd thing to celebrate, and besides they’re off by a month or so!

The films are Persuasion on 3 June (we’re not sure which one–they have a photo of the 1995 version, and a link to a trailer that didn’t work for us but is probably the 1995 version, though it makes more sense that it would be the newer one), Northanger Abbey on 10 June, and Emma (we think the Kate Beckinsale one) on 17 June. Enjoy your festival!

hmm, just made a strange discovery: on the site of the ncrv they put the old photo and trailer, but on all the other sites (with programmation things for television and radio) they refer to the 2007 version with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones ;)

Somebody’s confused somewhere. Well, you’ll be surprised when you watch, I guess!

I think this whole ‘festival’ is programmed by someone who doesn’t have clue about Jane Austen adaptations… In the TV magazines, but also on this website, everything (pictures, names of actors) is messed up. But I still think it’s Persuasion2007, because I think the NCRV might have bought it together with NA. But then the question is: why didn’t they also buy MP? Oh dear, now I am confused… ;)

I’ve looked in our t.v.guide, but this allso says
that persuasion is the 2007 version.
I am looking forward to it!!
Did you know, there is a nem film on the way, called “Becoming Jane”, a film of Jane Austen.
    Releasing in august.

I am practically sure that they are sending the new Persuasion version. I just love it that I finally got the change to watch it :D The NCRV bought Persuasion and Northanger at the same time indeed. But the reason why they didn’t buy Mansfield Park was because of the bad quality of the play! I just can’t imagine that with such a great cast, but I am not capable enough to give a grounded opinion about that of course… Well, fortanetely they are showing some other great plays!

and it was the new version indeed ;) I’ve really enjoyed watching it!

I watched the new version as well. I really liked the way they showed several scenes. The conversation between Harville and Wentworth in Lyme was a good idea. I did not like the ending of the film.
