A new Becoming Jane trailer, with snogging

Filed under: Becoming Jane — Mags @ 8:55 pm

Alert Janeite Robyn wrote to tell us that there is a new Becoming Jane trailer (slightly different from the UK trailer) at Yahoo Movies.

We have two comments to make:

1. What an marvelous cast!

2. Does anyone have a spot of Pepto-Bismol they could spare us? Or perhaps some insulin?

ETA: We’re not the only ones troubled by the trailer, but we don’t deny that Jane was capable of feeling passion, or that her books don’t contain it–just that the film is not only a Made Up Story, but from the evidence of the trailer typical Hollywood schlocky Made Up Story.

  1. Kerry Says:

I saw the new “Becoming Jane” trailer when I went to see “Waitress” today. I can’t handle it! It’s so. . .so. . .so. . .wrong! If I see it at all it will be with the attitude that I am watching a movie where the main character just happens to have the name Jane Austen. “Waitress” was lovely by the way.

  2. Missy Says:

I think I’ll skip the insulin and go straight to the morphine.

  3. Kathleen Says:

Heh. Say, since the trailer is basically the entire movie in a few minutes, you’ve seen it!
“Discover Jane Austen’s Untold Romance!”…sigh….can’t stop that one, even though all my acquaintances who saw it, even those not into the way of Jane, said it was obviously a Made-Up-Story. So perhaps the viewing public is not as thick as some like to believe.
I still maintain that you will use less sporks watching it than required by a viewing of ITV’s “Mansfield Park” (aka Pug was the Best MP). Just mindless fluff. Since it’s ‘not Jane Austen’ I can be more charitable than I am of adaptations of her work. Or maybe I’ve seen too many cruddy bio-pics and have no expectations of ever seeing accuracy portrayed on the screen.

  4. Franka Says:

Oh my God! The things that the voice over says at the end are so HORRIBLE! Something like ‘Discover the untold lovestory of Jane Austen, which inspired her writing’… Blegh! :( :(

Anyway, the trailer looks good. Better than the previous one. But why on earth is there so much snogging going on in this movie? WHY?

On the one hand I can’t wait to see this movie, to snark about it and enjoy the costumes, scenery and the wonderful acting work of especially James McAvoy, BUT on the other hand… I wish this whole movie never had been made…!

  5. Carmen Says:

No…worse than that!!! It has also the ‘raining scene’, awful!!!

I can’t wait till October to devastate this!!!! ;-)

  6. Reeba Says:

Thought I was watching some Pride and Prejudice adaptation, especially in that dancing scene, and Lizzy/Jane taking a walk and meeting Darcy/Tom Lefroy.
I still don’t see Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen.

  7. Laura Grace Says:

Quick question: are the two “full moons” also in this trailer? :p

  8. Chantel Says:

I really like the looks of it as a period film (btw this trailer is way better than the UK one!), if they would just cut out that it’s Jane and that she was “inspired” by “falling in love” with Tom LeFroy.

  9. Rosa Cotton Says:

Hmmm, according to Yahoo Movies it is PG-13. Wasn’t it rated PG in the UK?

  10. AmandaJ Says:

Franka, I’m afraid you won’t enjoy the costumes. The period and style of them are all over the place to the point where I found it completely disracting. And hilarious (so maybe you will enjoy the costumes, but not in the way you would in another period production).

  11. Joan Ellen Says:

I agree with Chantel. If they would just take out all references to Jane Austen, it might prove to be a pleasant little romantic movie.

For something billed as even remotely a bio of JA, however, it is not to be borne!

  12. Tony A Says:

Rosa, it was initially rated PG-13 by the MPAA, but was re-edited and subsequently awarded a PG rating.

For your information, the film is getting an 85% fresh (favorable) rating over at rottentomatoes.com, the same score that P&P (2005) got. Extremely favorable indeed. And it’s getting a 7.1 out of 10 at IMDb. What does this mean? Simply that viewers who are not as passionate as Janeites are about the subject either don’t have enough information to know better, or just don’t care about the historical accuracy of the story.

I am willing to bet that the majority here loved Amadeus. Surprise, surprise—the fact is, this was also a made-up story, no different from Becoming Jane, except, maybe for the superior acting, directing and screenplay. It was for this reason that I disliked Amadeus, and I’m not even half the Mozart fan as I am a Janeite.

  13. Bridget Says:

I was cringing throughout that entire trailer. They paralleled soooooo much with 05’s P&P trailer. ARGH. I’ll have to see it anyway though.

  14. Sibylle Says:

I don’t understand - is this really a trailer ? They’re giving everything, including what I assume are the ” key scenes ” ( i.e the kisses ). The score is beautiful, though also a bit weak.
And what a cast indeed ! I smiled each time I saw Maggie, she looks spectacular. It seems that we won’t see a lot of Anna Maxwell Martin, which is a shame because she’s really good.
And I agree, the voice over is quite annoying

  15. Lynne Says:

I showed this trailer to one of my friends who doesn’t know a whole lot about Jane Austen and she called it “Jane Austen fan fiction.” This gives me hope that maybe intelligent people who don’t know anything about Jane will recognize the Made Up Story aspects and won’t be fooled by “clever” marketing.

  16. Franka Says:

Thanks for warning me about the costumes, AmandaJ! :)

I also saw in the trailer that for example Anne Hathaway was wearing both Georgian and Regency gowns… But I thought it was just my lack of knowledge about costumes, assuming the film makers would have known what they were doing. Silly me… ;)

  17. Charlotte Says:

May I compare this to the UK trailer?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYViBfUvSOA&mode=related&search=

What does this say about US and UK audiences?
I find this rather patronising for US viewers; apparently you have to be told the whole story before you can be bothered to watch it, and that’s nothing but the gooey-ist romance story ever. At least the UK trailer gave some idea that she was interested in writing and stood out from the crowd a bit.
Then again, we had to put up with the Emma96 and the S&S95 soundtracks and we didn’t get any of the shimmering gold lettering that’s in the new trailer. Green with envy, I am. ;)

  18. Jeanne Says:

Well, I would rather see the movie in the UK trailer than the one in the American one, if I have a choice (!).

Personally, I’ve rarely found trailers to be particularly accurate representations of their respective movies anyway.

(And if I were the composer of “Becoming Jane,” I would be a bit miffed that the studio felt that the music from “Little Women” was a better draw.)
