Alert Janeite Helen B. wrote to let us know that the 1940 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is available on Region 2 DVD, but only at Amazon.fr. We could not find it at Amazon.co.uk; if anyone knows of a link, let us know. In the meantime, Region 2 goodness for our Gentle Readers across the pond.

A region 2 DVD has been available on amazon.de (Amazon Germany) since April. Here is the link:

And I’ve seen it for sale recently here in Australia for less than $10 (Australian, and therefore even cheaper in US dollars). And - as I hang my head in shame - I actually resisted buying it. It was the memory of jolly Lady Catherine urging Darcy to propose to Lizzie that made me do so.

You can buy also from Spain since this Spring. There is also the film’s trailer and short movies in the disc.

Ah! In Spain, the titles is not Pride & Prejudice, it is ‘Stronger than Pride’.

The phrase “Region 2 goodness” reminds me that there’s a new Regency vampire novel called “The Rest Falls Away,” by Colleen Gleason, described as “Buffy Meets Jane Austen.” Intriguing…

  5. Mags Says:

I have it on VHS and, while I enjoy watching it occasionally, have not been tempted to purchase it on DVD. If I ever go exclusively DVD, I guess I’ll have to think about it…
