I saw the Rice Portrait today at lunch.

The photograph does not do justice to the original. The original is very vibrant. The dress is beautifully done. It’s very delicate, very gauzy. I am in awe of people who can paint like that. The girl’s eyes positively sparkle (my companion has described them as “impish”), and she looks like someone who enjoys a good laugh. This girl’s cheeks and chin do resemble the watercolor picture of Jane that Cassandra painted.

Whether or not it really is a portrait of Jane Austen, it’s a very lovely painting in and of itself and I’m glad I took the time to go see it.

I’ve always thought it is a really pretty painting. Unfortunately, I think that’s why it has so many champions, who I think do not completely consider the rather dodgy provenance of the painting.
