Got out of town on a boat goin’ to southern islands

Filed under: Online — Mags @ 6:33 am

This really doesn’t have a lot anything to do with Jane Austen (tho’ we suspect the name of the boat is no coincidence) but it easily is the coolest thing we’ve seen in yonks, and also gives us the opportunity to quote lyrics from one of our favorite songs.

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way

A travel article in theToronto Star had the usual sort of blurb about a guided trip to learn photography on a cruise to Patagonia, but it was the link-for-more-info that intrigued us: www.northanger.org. Now that’s a site we could not resist visiting. With Catherine Morland-like curiosity, we typed the URL into our browser and discovered something truly beautiful: Northanger, a 54-foot steel ketch,

…built expressly with the desire to access remote regions of the globe. Small, compact, self sufficient expeditions to high latitudes. On voyages to Norway, Alaska, Antarctica and through the Northwest Passage, Northanger successfully went the limits and back.

Check out the site. The photos of the various expeditions are amazing. Also check out the site of the photographer leading the trip for more gorgeous photos.

I have longed to go to Patagonia, like, forever. Thanks for the links.

Me too, when I was ten I wanted more than any place to visit Tierra Del Fuego, The Land of Fire. Awesome pictures, gorgeous, and what better way to get there than sailing on the Northanger. Also Mags, that is one of my favorite songs too, by Crosby Stills and Nash, one of my favorite bands. “Think about how many times I have fallen, spirits are using me larger voices calling, what Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten…”

  3. Mags Says:

I always think of Captain Wentworth singing it. Corny, I know, especially since he was in the Med for much of his captaining career… “I have been around the world, looking for that woman girl, who knows love can endure…”

  4. Jessica Irene Says:

Oh yes, Capt. Wentworth pacing the poop deck, singing…”On the midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away…”
