“He looked as handsome and lively as ever…

“…and was talking with interest to a fashionable and pleasing-looking young woman, who leant on his arm, and whom Catherine immediately guessed to be his sister…”

Anne Timmons has sent us some more of her artwork for the upcoming graphic novelization of Northanger Abbey–with the longed-for glimpse of Da Man! Henry, we are told, is in the last two frames; the dark-haired damsel with the big eyes is Catherine, the vivacious blonde in the early panels, we think, is Isabella Thorpe, the dark-haired young man James Morland, and the young lady with Henry in the final frames is Eleanor Tilney.

Is Henry asking Catherine to dance in the last frame? Oh joy! A delightful compliment, indeed.

Jane Austen, Teenage Sensation

(Our Gentle Readers are requested to imagine us intoning the title in tones of heavy irony.)

Alert Janeite Lisa let us know that the Telegraph has announced that Jane Austen is being positioned to become the latest Teenage Sensation. Jane help us all.

Bookshops and libraries, anticipating a surge of interest in the author as a result of her exposure on both the big and small screens, are planning major displays of her works.

This, we allow, is a very good thing.

Penguin said it planned new editions of the author’s six best-known works with covers designed to appeal to teenagers.

Covers with scantily-clad Abercrombie & Fitch models, perhaps, showing cleavage and six-packs?

Douglas Rae, the film’s producer, said: “We are on course for the most prolific year of Jane Austen’s career in terms of television and film coverage. We went with Anne because we know she will bring a young teen audience with her film.

Many of us have assumed this all along. The film certainly has not been made to entice those already Janeites except by accident.

We also point out that of the individuals quoted in the story, not one can be considered anything like an expert on Jane Austen. Enough said.

Alert Janeite Carmen also sent us a link to the UK movie poster–click on the little one on the left side of the page for a bigger version. Pray note the logline, and recall that someone was paid to write that.
