Longing for a Ball in Birmingham

Filed under: Austen Societies and Events — Mags @ 7:26 am

The Regency Assembly in Birmingham (UK) will hold their May Ball on Saturday, 19 May 2007 at The George Hotel Lichfield, Staffordshire. The Regency Assembly offers classes in the country dances of Jane Austen’s period twice monthly. Click on the “Links” page on their Web site (no direct link, sorry) for a list of other country dance groups in the UK.

AHH! I’m flying into Manchester, UK, the morning of the 19th! I could conceivably go to this ball!

Oh Zoe I wish I could go to. My husband was born and raised in Birmingham and all his family live there, though none of them would be interested. We are not due for another trip there for a while but next time I go I plan to connect with this local group! Have fun and send pics if you go!

Well, after looking into it, you are required both to know the dances and have period costume. And apparently they *really* mean period costume, not just “dress with an empire waist,” because there’s a note that says “Regency is preferred, though Georgian is acceptable.” Eek. I’m ashamed to say I’m not that big of a Janeite to know these distinctions, nor do I have enough time before my trip to learn all this stuff. So, sigh, I won’t be going. It’s a lovely dream though! And, I will be going to loads of Jane Austen sites and definitely plan to document my trip online when I get back.
