Vicar of Dibley Christmas episode features Austen references

Filed under: Screen — Mags @ 5:13 pm

Alert Janeite Patty wrote to tell us that Part I of the Christmas episode of The Vicar of Dibley (which we understand is also the series finale) contained some Jane Austen references. From Patty’s e-mail:

Sense and Sensibility (both the book and the Ang Lee film) were mentioned in the first episode of the Christmas special of The Vicar of Dibley.

Vicar Geraldine Granger says it is her favourite book and then there’s a scene with a parody of Emma Thompson’s reaction to the news that Edward is not married. I think I’ll never see that scene in the same way anymore.

We decided to poke around a bit on YouTube and wouldn’t you know, some kind soul has enabled the Janeites. And it’s hysterical. AND it features the absolutely delicious Richard Armitage kicking Hugh Grant to the curb in the Charming Handsome Hero category.

We believe Part 2 is to be broadcast today…the YouTube watch has begun. ;-)

Delightful! I had never even heard of this funny show. And to see Richard Armitage again in action….mmmmm, yummy. He was so good in North and South! She is a hoot! Emma’s crying scene as Elinor had always made me squirm.

    Soooo funny!

I wonder if Ms. French shares Ms. Hathaway’s opinion of screen kisses? ;)

I have always liked the Vicar of Dibley, but it’s not shown in the States very often. I can only hope I’ll be able to afford the complete set on DVD in Region 2.

The whole thing cracked me up, but I especially loved the part when Geraldine ran into the church and started ringing the bell.

After this clip was over, I watched “It should have been me.” Priceless!

Absolutely, delightfully funny! Thank you for posting the link! And I agree with you Julie p. “It should have been me” was priceless!

Oh how I wish I had high speed instead of dial-up! I shall go pout in a corner now.

    Must. Stop. Laughing. *fallsoffthechair*

I just discovered it’s possible to swoon and laugh at the same time! Geraldine’s reaction was fantastic (yes, the bell ringing was the best) and had me in stitches. (I’d probably flip out and lose my ability to speak coherently if Richard Armitage suddenly proposed to me, too). And OH, his Royal Armitageness was so adorable. Okay…going to go watch it again now.

  9. Maisy Says:

It’s difficult to tell on the YouTube clips that Harry’s sister Rosie is played by Keeley Hawes.

  10. Jessica Irene Says:

Isn’t Keeley Hawes married to Matthew MacFadyen of 2005 P&P? Also isn’t the friend of Geraldine Granger the girl who played Hugh Grants’ sister in Notting Hill? Another Jane movie connection! Will some kind UK soul inform this deprived yank?

I loved the other clips of the Vicar on youtube.com too: the water hole one where she is stalking “Ye Royal Armitage” (love that Kelley B.) and also where she gets drunk…

  11. Patty Says:

Keeley Hawes is definitely married to Matthew MacFadyen.

  12. Jessica Irene Says:

Oh. In that case I detest her with a passion.

  13. Karenlee Says:

Oh, oh, oh - I’ve never seen this series but that was so funny!
