Props and costumes from MANSFIELD PARK (1999) being auctioned on eBay

Filed under: Online, Screen — Mags @ 6:04 am

Alert Janeite Elizabeth wrote to let us know that costumes and props from the 1999 adaptation of MANSFIELD PARK are being auctioned on eBay. Just in time for Halloween…you could be the Regency Morticia Addams! Or go for the Anglican schoolgirl look! ;-)

ETA: Several of the costumes are marked as “worn by Andrea.” Who the heck is Andrea? There’s no character or actress by that name in the film…hmm.

Also, it should be noted that the proceeds of these items will go to charity.

FYI, the actresses are both about 5′8″ (1.73m), to give an idea of the dress lengths.

Are they REALLY from the movie?! I can’t believe some of them are still so cheap… A pity they didn’t auction the gowns of Maria and Julia Bertram, because I think they were prettier than Fanny’s. ;-)

I liked that blue one with the net sleeves that Mary wore. They had it as part of the Jane Austen movie costumes exhibition at the Museum of Costume in Bath last year. It’s a really beautiful dress, though of course not at all period-correct. And it doesn’t seem to be in the auction.

I recognize the one that I called the Anglican Schoolgirl look–it reminded me of my older sister’s Catholic high school uniform from the late 60s/early 70s.

I think “Andrea” might be Andrea Galer, the costume designer from the film.

Hmm…maybe she was an extra in the film? Or they just got the names mixed up.

The costumes they say were worn by Andrea appear in the movie worn by Fanny Price and Mary Crawford. Andrea could have been a double, but probably they had Andrea Galer in mind. Looking at the costumes they auctioned off and those they plan to in the future, it looks like the costumes all belong to either Fanny or Mary. Though a few of them I don’t reconize. Mary’s navy blue dress exhibited at the Museum of Costume in Bath last year doesn’t appear to be among them.

Gawd, I’ve seen better and more acurate Regency dresses off the rack at “Miss Selfridge” (insert the sort of emoticon that requires those little paper bags airlines give you). The 1999 MP was so ghastly I’ve tried burning most of my recollections out from my memory banks. In fact, whenever I’m whinging on about the latest P&P, you should smack me with a cricket bat and yell ‘Remember MP!’. I remember seeing some of the MP costumes at the exhibition in the Assembly Rooms in Bath. They really looked like cheap tat compared to the glories (and fabulous detail) of the costumes for Persuasion2 that were there as well (I want Miss Elliot’s yellot velvet topper…please!).

*whips out credit card, only to search for Alessandro Nivola in vain*
