On-set photos from PERSUASION 2007
Austenwitness News Reporter Owen posted in comments a link to his Flickr photoset of Bath Street filming of PERSUASION 2007, including shots of Sally Hawkins in costume and Rupert Penry-Jones not in costume. AustenBlog readers who are, like the Editrix, dedicated fans of the 1995 film will remember another scene that took place on the same street…(when we were there last year, there was scaffolding up on one side of the street, which sort of ruins the atmosphere.)

Does anyone know if this and the other ITV films will EVER be shown in the states, or otherwise be made available to those of us across the pond?

The new ITV and BBC versions of Persuasion, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility will air on PBS’s Masterpiece Theater next season (2007-2008).

Are you quite sure that is Sally Hawkins? She doesn’t look much like on her publicity shot. And if that is she, could she be just a wee bit too young to play Anne? I just got a hold of the DVD with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds and I still love, after having seen it only about 25 times. My favourite scene? The one in the cottage: “Is that a love letter you are reading?”

I’m obviously in a very Austen-minded way because last night as I watched “Casanova” on Masterpiece Theatre, the only thing I thought about when Rupert Penry-Jones came on screen was, “Ooh, Captain Wentworth!”

He’s a bit of all right, eh? And obviously can play an SOB, as Frederick is early in the piece…I get SO MAD at him when he is mean to Anne.
I really liked CASANOVA, too, though I don’t normally care for period films done in a “modern” style, like A KNIGHT’S TALE and similar. I was thinking that if BECOMING JANE were done in that style, it would be great, but I have a feeling it’s not.

Oh, well isn’t this just great? Here I am with tons of stuff that I have to get done today and now I can’t concentrate because I have Persuasion on the brain.
And Mags, you would pull out the big guns (Ciaran Hinds in that kissing scene) Now, I will have to stop what I’m doing, go into the living room, turn on the DVD player and spend the next two hours getting my “Captain on” — which will eventually lead me into watching Excaliber… then Ivanhoe.

Oh, Mags, I am so glad I wasn’t the only one! He certainly has grown up since the last time I saw him. I think he’ll do quite well in the role.
I’m with you on your thoughts regarding “Casanova” as well. I’m sure my “Doctor Who” love had a bit to do with my enjoyment last night, but I’m all for a costume drama that’s just so irreverent and meta.

Not sure if this was brought up before. I just caught this today while I was watching episode 8 of season 4 of Spooks. Adam Carter (played by RPJ) has a conversation with the head psychiatrist. He has to surrender his laptop, cell phone, and books before undergoing treatment, and the psychiatrist finds an Austen novel among his positions.
“Are you a fan of Jane Austen?”
“Yes. She notices things.”

The costumes are lovely, the scenes look like they are going to be perfect! Oh, I’m in a JA mood now which is nice after a busy day!
RPJ is going to make a nice Cap W. I think despite my first reserve of having a flaxen haired hero. Rupert and Sally look nice together, just the right ages and appearences. I can’t wait!

Sarah, if they are any good, which they will be, they will be for sale on DVD at some point. That’s when I’ll be able to see them. Though I will most likely rent them through Netflix before I buy them. Though I do have a sister who might get PBS…hmm…maybe I could bribe her into taping them for me.
