Jane Austen featured in episode of THE ARCHERS

Alert Janeite Stephen Wenlock wrote to tell us that Jane Austen’s work was featured in an episode of the BBC radio program(me), THE ARCHERS. Here is Stephen’s description of the episode:

Nigel Pargetter, owner of Lower Loxley, the local crumbling Jacobean manor house, wants to make a romantic gesture to his wife, Elizabeth, a member of the Archer family after whom the programme is named, to mark their 12th wedding anniversary and to show his appreciation for all her hard work running conferences at Lower Loxley.

So he dresses in a baggy-sleeved shirt and breeches, and calls her out to the pond in the grounds, where he identifies himself as “Darcy Pargetter” and swims over to her side of the pond, emerging shivering to quote Darcy’s proposal to Lizzie, to which Elizabeth responds appropriately, before they rush inside to warm up a bit, whereupon he presents her with a beautifully bound edition of P&P.

You probably had to be there…

Naah, it’s very sweet! And her name is Elizabeth, how perfect!

Stephen reports that our Gentle Readers can listen to the episode in Real Audio format (boo! hiss!) for the next week. Click the link for this past Friday.
