A brother or sister in every carriage

Filed under: Northanger Abbey 2007 — Mags @ 11:19 pm

Alert Janeite HeatherL sent a link to a little article on unison.ie about nine-year-old Alana Brennan, who has been cast as one of Catherine’s little sisters in Northanger Abbey 2007. The link requires registration; you can register if you want to read it, or use BugMeNot, or just read the below–there’s not much more to it.

Cratloe primary school student Alana Brennan has been cast as a member of the Morland family in a forthcoming TV version of the novel ‘Northanger Abbey’.

[. . .]

“I’m delighted, absolutely thrilled with the part,” said Alana last night. “I found out two weeks ago and started bawling crying. My mam said, ‘You’re supposed to cry when you don’t get a part, not when you get it,’” she laughed.

Awww. She’s a little too old to play Hannah Harriet (the very youngest Morland at four) and too young to play Sarah (the next youngest to Catherine at 16) so we’ll probably see Alana running round the parsonage.

ETA: Hannah? *Editrix smacks self with Clue Trout*

Whatever her age, she’s old enough to disturb Catherine while she is enjoying the luxury of frightened imaginations, or should I say, the luxury of ….exciting daydreams ;-)

  2. Kelley B Says:

Oh thank goodness they’ve cast one of the unknown Morland siblings! I was worried they would overlook the children and waste their time on less important characters, like Capt Tilney :-P

  3. Niamh Says:

According to an Irish tabloid I read today, she will be playing Harriet Morland.

Poor Harriet, fallen victim to the dread disease SORAS.

LOL Mags. I am SO looking forward to this production. The casting seems right on to me.

Clue trout? Softer than a clubat, I daresay. Hannah is a lovely name. Perhaps one of the unnamed ones was called Hannah. How many was it John Thorpe said they had? 17? Plenty of room for a Hannah.

    The Clue Trout!

Although it looks sorta small for the Clue Trout–might actually be the Clue Herring.

And a family of ten children will be always called a fine family, where there are heads and arms and legs enough for the number. ;-)

I do think it’s nice that they are going to have the other Morland children but I do hope that they don’t put her as a sister inbetween Catherine and Sarah! Something I read (I believe it was a quiz book on JA) made the point that Catherine must have only had two sisters (Sarah and Harriet) since it seemed that the other Morland children were away at school and only the boys in that family were given that privledge.

The idea that most of the children were away from home at the time of Catherine’s arrival home come from this portion in chapter 29: “Her father, mother, Sarah, George, and Harriet, all assembled at the door to welcome her with affectionate eagerness,”
If the whole family were at home I would suppose that the whole family would finally make an appearence to greet her.

But I suppose it would be worse that Harriet be portrayed as 9-years-old than that there be more Morland sisters!

She said in the article that she was playing a 7-year-old - so the character has aged, but she has lost a year or two, if you get me. ;) Why this is, I have no idea.
