Supporting cast for Northanger Abbey 2007 confirmed (updated with links and photos)

Filed under: Northanger Abbey 2007 — Mags @ 10:32 pm

The Irish Film Board has released the rest of the cast for the upcoming television film adaptation for Northanger Abbey 2007.

ETA: Alert Janeite Sylvia M. sent links to photos of most of the cast members, which we’ll post below. The links on their names go to their page on the IMDB.

Catherine Morland: Felicity Jones
Henry Tilney: JJ Feild
Isabella Thorpe: Carey Mulligan (photo1 photo2)
Eleanor Tilney: Catherine Walker (photo)
Mrs Allen: Sylvestra Le Touzel (photo)
Mr Allen: Desmond Barrit (photo)
James Morland: Hugh O’Connor (photo)
General Tilney: Liam Cunningham (photo)
John Thorpe: Wiliam Beck (photo)
Mr Morland: Gerry O’Brien
Mrs Morland: Julia Dearden (photo)

Some of these names will be familiar to Janeites. Sylvestra Le Touzel was Fanny Price in the BBC production of MANSFIELD PARK from the 1980s (MP1) and Carey Mulligan was Kitty Bennet in the most recent film production of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (P&P3).

Alert Janeite Cinthia wrote to us and said that perhaps we had not heard the news since HeatherL is away. Amusingly, Heather wrote to us last night and predicted it would be announced while she is away!

Thanks to Alert Janeite KelleyB (filling in admirably for HeatherL) for sending along the information as well!

An editorial aside: we are glad to see that the Allens and Mrs. Morland at least aren’t cast as elderly–because they both were probably in their mid- to late 40s! Also, boy, didn’t they do a good job picking a General Tilney who really could play this Henry’s dad?

Bit of MANSFIELD PARK 2007 casting news

Filed under: Mansfield Park 2007 — Mags @ 10:30 pm

Alert Janeite and Internet Hound Sylvia M sent us a link to Iain B. MacDonald’s CV, which lists Hayley Atwell as one of the stars of MANSFIELD PARK 2007–but doesn’t say which part. Sylvia suggests perhaps one of the Bertram sisters, which seems likely. Hayley will appear in RUBY IN THE SMOKE with Billie Piper, who will play Fanny Price. Here is a CV for Hayley with a photo. Hilariously, she also has appeared in a film called FEAR OF FANNY. Tee-hee!

Twin Pemberleys

AustenBlog Reader Kirsty has been living the life of an heroine lately: invited to visit friends in Derbyshire! She visited both Chatsworth (Pemberley in P&P3) and Lyme Park (Pemberley in P&P2) and took photos to share with her blog readers. Lyme Park is covered in scaffolding and looks a bit sad–but still great–and Chatsworth is simply spectacular, but we knew that. ;-) Check out her pics of Mr. Darcy’s bust and Miss Bennet’s gown.

(We can’t wait to go back to the U.K.–seven hours of dehydration and boredom or not.)

“Sense and Sensibility” patterns will be available from Simplicity

Jennie Chancey’s Sense and Sensibility patterns for Regency gowns and undergarments will be available from Simplicity Patterns in the autumn–which means they will be easier than ever for sewers to find and purchase. We do not sew (though we wish we knew how) but have heard many wonderful comments from those who do about these patterns.

Do you prefer a plain dish or a ragout?

An article about “British Food Fortnight” includes a reference to food-related events associated with the Jane Austen Festival in Bath, September 16-24, 2006.

Jane Austen fans flock to Bath for the annual Jane Austen Festival which takes place this year from 16th to 24th September. Bath was her home for a five year period at the end of the Eighteenth Century and two of her novels are largely set in Bath. This year’s programme features a “Very Private Public Breakfast” and “From Turkey to Trifle, the Customs of an Eighteenth Century Dinner “ both hosted by Jane Tapley who gives a talk and hosts authentic Georgian fare in a typical Regency terraced house. Her talks cover the recipes and customs of the day as well as tableware used at such prestigious gatherings.

Bonne chance!

She won’t see this, as she is traveling today and the Editrix has been distracted and neglectful of her blog lately *beats self with Cluebat*, but we send heartfelt good wishes to Heather Laurence, who is off to the Gloria Film Festival, where her script, NORTHANGER RANCH, a contemporary adaptation of Northanger Abbey, will be part of the screenplay competition. Fingers and toes are duly crossed!

Also congratulations to Amanda Grange, whose book Darcy’s Diary will be available in the U.S. via Sourcebooks. She promises details about release date, etc. when they become available. Great news for those who have wanted to get a copy!
