Belowstairs gossip
Dorothy has been carrying gossip again. Normally we would not lower ourself to listen or to pass it on, but as it is rather juicy we could not keep silent.
We have heard a rumor that BECOMING JANE will be released to theatres in the spring or summer of 2007. We have received no official confirmation of this whatsoever; it is firmly in the area of RUMOR at this point. Please keep that in mind.
That being said, our authority is quite good. But then so was Aunt Gardiner’s when she thought Mrs. Reynolds was slandering Wickham. ![]()

Very interesting rumour which if it turns to be true can be read in some ways:
1) that it is not being considered as Oscar material,
2) it will take even longer to be released in other countries around the world (or worse, even never as I suspect would happen in mine as period films are not popular).

Why do you think it wont be considered as Oscar material?
It has Oscar written all over it!!!
They are being wise enough to release it middle of next year like I predicted, they would be even wiser to release it in August or Sept of 2007 to make sure its considered Oscar potential.

yeahh

Most films being purposely positioned for the Oscars are released late in the year so they are fresh in the voters’ minds. However, remember that CRASH came out in the summer.
I saw it on the plane coming back from the U.K. in October.

who do u think can be nominated? Anne Hathaway?
May 19th, 2006 at 1:57 pm
The gaffer, the best boy, craft services, the guy who picks up the honey wagons, and Keira Knightley, for her reflected glow of glory that beams over us all.
May 19th, 2006 at 4:50 pm
I didn’t get what Mags just said!!! Were you being sarcastic??
I do expect Anne to get a mention, especially now amid reports that her accent is ”flawless” ” impeccable”.
She was pityfully overlooked for Brokeback Mountain despite being superb in it. And with Julie Walters, James McAvoy, Maggie Smith, Anna Maxwell Martin etc…………..
It will be VERY hard for the Academy to overlook this movie, and Jane Austen is very popular with them as can be seen by Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice.

I didn’t get what Mags just said!!! Were you being sarcastic??
You must be new here.
May 19th, 2006 at 5:41 pm
I am.
I just didnt get the Knightley part, looks to me like you weren’t a big fan of her performance in that movie.
May 19th, 2006 at 5:47 pm
You could say that, yes. I also was not a big fan of the way Hollywood was salivating for an opportunity to push her into the Oscar limelight, waiting until she made a movie where she didn’t absolutely stink out the place that wasn’t a Disney summer flick and then acting like she’s the second coming of Meryl Streep. Give her another ten years and then we’ll see.
May 19th, 2006 at 6:41 pm
OH MY GOD!!!
You took the words right out of my mouth Mags!! Thank God there is someone out there who thinks Keira sucked in P&P and to make matters worse she just signed on for Attonement!!!! $HIT ( can I say that here? )
And there was an article to day in the Daily Mail ( who literally worships her ) than she is being considered for The Other Boleyn Girl as well.
How many more historical movies and classics is she going to destroy. I cringe everytime I think of the fact that she was nominated for Pride and Prejudice and know hearing things like she is ” Britains pride..” the Best British young starlet out there yata yata.
Are people even AWARE of the fact that there are many other talented young actresses out there, British as well as from other nationalities.
I cannot comprehend with it if the dont nominate Anne for this movie, they should.
As for Keira I hope she improves with her acting otherwise I have to see her butcher every movie she is in.
May 20th, 2006 at 7:16 pm
$HIT ( can I say that here? )
You just did, didn’t you? But it does not seem very ladylike.
I cannot comprehend with it if the dont nominate Anne for this movie, they should.
How can you say that when you haven’t seen the movie yet?
May 21st, 2006 at 12:09 pm
Its common kowledge that biopics hold a special place in the Academy’s heart. It would be insane to overlook the movie especially the lead protraying the figure.
”How can you say that when you haven’t seen the movie yet? ”
As I said earlier they overlooked her performance for Brokeback Mountain and the Academy does have a thing for giving nominations back like they did this year with Paul Giamatti for Cinderella Man having had overlooked him for Sideways.
I am pretty positive the movie will be good and Anne will be good.
P.s $hit seems okay compared to other curse words people use all the time.

Well I have only seen Keira Knightley in two movies, King Arthur and Pride and Prejudice and you can guess as to which one was better. Her acting has improved alot from King Arthur but at the same time I didn’t feel the Lizzie vibe I felt from Jennifer Ehle’s performance in the BBC adaptation instead of the movie.
Calling her Meryl Streep’s second coming is definitely ridiculous.
However I do feel with Becoming Jane Anne will offer more than Keira did In Pride and Prejudice and she is backed by a superb cast : including Anna Maxwell Martin ( so glad she won the Bafta Yeah ).
It is true we can’t say much before the movie comes out but one can be optimistic can’t we.
May 21st, 2006 at 2:27 pm
Fine, be optimistic, but don’t expect this blog to become Astroturf Central for Anne Hathaway fans. Nonsensical statements will be met with our usual response.
May 21st, 2006 at 5:11 pm
Since when did I say I was a fan of Anne Hathaway, I have seen her in just Brokeback Mountain and enjoyed her work and like the idea of her portraying Jane Austen!!!
”Nonsensical statements ”
Care to ellaborate, as I recall you did say things regarding Keira Knightley that I didn’t deem as ” nonsensical”.
Just because someone is discussing the potential award stuff regarding this movie things get ”nonsensical”.
Why don’t you say that to the person who started this Oscar Buzz then, scroll up and see.
I didn’t say anything stupid or moronic or talk negative things and yet some how for the life of me what I said turned out to be foolish.
Foolish according to your standards Mags but I’d rather be an optimistic then a pessimist regarding something I am looking forward too.
May 21st, 2006 at 11:19 pm
Pax, Rose. Forgive my sometimes knee-jerk responses. I just wish people would remember that this is AUSTENblog and that Jane Austen is my first loyalty. (Not suggesting that you have done otherwise.)
I am just reacting to what I know so far. That doesn’t mean I won’t change my mind about it at some point, most likely after I’ve seen the movie. Believe me, if I like it, I’ll be VERY loud about it!!!
May 22nd, 2006 at 8:29 am
Thats okay, in fact I came here to say that my comment might have been a tad-bit too much.
But you have a point this a Jane Austen blog and will remain a Jane Austen blog.
May 22nd, 2006 at 12:01 pm
Am I being called? My apologies to Mags, for having caused so much trouble by my comment and also for this belated reply, real life interfers sometimes.
Rose, I simply cannot understand why you are so angry about it.
Granted, perhaps my reasoning was simplistic, but that’s the only comment I could offer (and still can). Mags in post no. 4 explained it shortly. The Academy has a very short-term memory, and rarely remember to nominate films that were released in spring and summer. There are exceptions, but I cannot place one that has been a period film, which could be the broad categorization for Becoming Jane. Those kind of films are usually saved for autumn and winter where their chances to being remembered increase. That’s why I said it was not being considered as Oscar material. Another reason for that speculation, is the distribution company in USA, it will be Miramax the one promoting it in USA, a company expert in scheduling the release of what they think is their Oscar material films precisely in winter.
I would have suppose that these arguments were trying to be objective.
May 22nd, 2006 at 3:04 pm
As I said earlier in my post I may have said a bit too much.
We can’t really say much until next year when the movie comes out and the way time is running by that time might come sooner than we all realise.
May 23rd, 2006 at 1:54 pm
Do you think the rumor is right? or will ir be released this December?
May 23rd, 2006 at 2:53 pm
It seems too tight for them to release it this summer.
May 23rd, 2006 at 3:02 pm
2007. Next year.
May 26th, 2006 at 10:46 am
I think it will be released late December 2006 or August 2007.
May 26th, 2006 at 10:54 am
Well, that narrows it down.
May 31st, 2006 at 12:52 pm
oh ok. Is it trut that they have finished fimng of this movie last week?
May 31st, 2006 at 3:57 pm
Not true I think they are taking some time off.Someone on imdb.com posted a few days ago they were shooting somewhere in Wicklow mountains close to a cricket match and the cast took time off and actually played cricket along with them.
So I guess they are still shooting it.
