Now this is what we call a “Special Edition”

Filed under: Screen — Mags @ 11:38 pm

Alert Janeite Maria B. wrote to tell us about a special 10th anniversary edition of the 1995 PRIDE AND PREJUDICE miniseries (P&P2) that will be released in September 2006. There was an anniversary edition released a while back, but this seems to include some actual new things. From the listing on Amazon:

DVD Features:

  • Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo)
  • 10th Anniversary Limited Edition Collector’s Set
  • Gold embossed green fabric slipcase
  • Newly remastered widescreen print

Bonus Disc Features:

  • Jane Austen BIOGRAPHY episode
  • An exclusive new retrospective documentary about the making of the classic series
  • A 120 page deluxe companion book The Making Of Pride and Prejudice
  • Interviews with cast and crew

We know there are some who will be very happy with the remastered DVD. :-) And we assume that the documentary is the one that was broadcast on British TV last year and that the Making of P&P book is the one that everyone probably has already. :-)

And may we add, as an editorial aside, that it’s about sodding time that this series has received this treatment?

But what about the interviews with cast and crew? Do you think that is a new production, or just the same one that we have on the current DVD? It is an interesting piece but doesn’t include Mr. Firth … or the goddess Jennifer Ehle …
I hope the remastered print has brighter colours in it than what we have now.

But was it actually filmed in widescreen? It was made for television, after all. I’ve never noticed any of the obviously cut off edges that you notice when you see a feature film that has been trimmed left and right to fit a TV. I certainly hope it was; even more Mr. Darcy!

    Finally!

I wonder why they released a 10th Anniversary DVD last year, and now release another one…
But I think it’s great that we can finally buy a Special Edition and I hope it contains at least some things we haven’t seen before! ;)

Sarah, British television has a wider ratio than North America, so it will be sorta-kinda widescreen at least. They did have to trim a bit for our televisions.

And Robin, I was thinking that the remastering would brighten up the colors, that’s why I said many would welcome it. I just adjust my TV settings when I watch mine.

The JA Biography wasn’t available on DVD a few months ago, and I’m not sure it’s even available on VHS anymore, so that’s a nice addition.

I can’t help but nurture a faint little hope that they’ll re-edit the ending, put some of that post-understanding conversation back in, and sell a ‘director’s cut’. Pathetic, I know, but look at all those copies of Star Wars!

  7. Sylvia Says:

If it includes all this I’ll be happy! I ordered the last “10th anniversary edition” in the hope to find some new footage and was a little disappointed. But the lovely new cover and the fact that a spare set of DVDs might come in handy sometime have reconciled me since. Well, Third time is a charm, they say! :)
    (Am I crazy, or what?)

You really should get an amazon account, so you make a couple of bucks when you point us to the great Jane items.

At least you could make a couple bucks.

Well, some TV series, such as Alias, are shot in film. If this was also originally shot in film they could have gone back to the reels to create the widescreen version. :)

Nicci–that’s very sweet. :-) However, I find ample compensation in drinking the blood of unwary P&P3 fans who wander into the blog.

    ;-)

    Just thought I’d share…
Last Sunday, my boyfriend and I were baking cookies and I suggested we watch the miniseries, half that night and half the next day. (We both had Monday off from work.) He protested a bit, but eventually agreed to watch. We finished the first DVD at around 10 p.m., and he was so enthralled with it that he insisted on watching the second.

I’ll make an Austen fan out of him yet. :)

Oh Mags, how you make me giggle! :D

The Special Edition comes out on my birthday! Huzzah!

Will this be available in the United States too?
