Region 4 P&P3 DVD released
Alert Janeite Dianne from JASA wrote to tell us that the Region 4 DVD for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE has been released. She also passed on the following:
…the list of extras on the back cover includes something called “The Life and Times of Jane Austin”. Seriously. On the back cover of the DVD. In print. Fortunately for my poor nerves, it doesn’t appear anywhere else, and the featurette itself has the correct spelling.
*sigh* Dorothy! A strong pot of tea, directly! With a generous splash of the Tullamore Dew, if you please.
Well, the DVD cover for P2 got corrected eventually, so we’ll hold out hope for the Janeites down under!

The one here in the USA has the name spelled correctly, although the featurette (I am assuming it might be the same) is called “Jane Austen, Ahead of Her Time”
I am curious, why are there regions when it comes to DVDs … different formats? I noticed that the version in the United States only has English, Spanish and French (both dubbed and in subtitles) but someone mentioned that the European version has 15 languages. Here in the USA we people who speak many different languages … why don’t they just do one version for everyone???
Just curious, so I thought I could learn something today.

Different formats, for one thing–Europe is PAL, North American is NTSC, and don’t ask me what the difference is, cause I don’t know!

Thanks, Mags, for the explanation. Here in NYC that would have a different meaning, PAL stands for the Police Athletic League, so I think we can safely assume that is not what it stads for.
I did a search for DVD coding and found a site that explains it pretty clearly. http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#1.10
It is all a matter of money and insuring that a movie is not out on DVD before it is released to the theaters. Those “universal” players sound good, don’t they?

They work well, too… *whistles innocently*

I wonder where one can get one of those … they sound like just the thing for any fan, don’t you think? Back in my youth… *wistful sigh*… I was president of a fan club for a Spanish singer (not Julio Iglesias) and it was such a thrill to get the record albums from Spain way ahead of their being released here in the USA. Good thing there were no region restrictions on record players!
