Anna Maxwell Martin added to BECOMING JANE cast
Alert Janeite Alan posted in comments for another post that Anna Maxwell Martin’s agency CV page says that she will shortly begin work on BECOMING JANE. No word on her part; Alan thinks Cassandra Austen, and we tend to agree.
Anna recently played Esther Summerson in the BBC/Masterpiece Theatre production of BLEAK HOUSE and played Bessy Higgins in NORTH AND SOUTH.

Way cool! I absolutely loved her as Bessie in N&S! I think she’d make a great Cassandra, but as Anne Hathaway’s sister? I guess anything is possible with a little make-up! lol!

I think she would have been an awesome Jane, actually.
She might be playing one of the Lloyd sisters.

In Bleak House, Anna had the problem of looking nothing like her mother, Lady Dedlock, played by Gillian Anderson even though the story depended on there being a resemblance. The best that can be said is that they both have amazing blue eyes!
Still, I hope she has landed the part of Cassandra as this is sure to be more substantial than those of Mary or Martha Lloyd.

Anna Maxwell is an amazing actress. I am glad she has been chosen, as the cast will be top notch.
I was surprised to read some publicity in Entertainment magazine. The movie Becoming Jane will
be based on one of Jane’s love affairs. DId she have more than one? and it was a week of flirting, to
my knowledge. They also noted Anne Hathaway would not need nose makeup!!

Oooo, cool!! Yay! I was hoping we’d see Anna MM in more movies (preferably period), and here’s another!! And I was hoping for more work for her, b/c she’s a good actress!
Yeah, I agree with Mags, AMM would make a great Jane! They shoulda thought of that before. Ugh! Casting directors! (And directors and producers and whoever else decides that stuff.)

Anna Maxwell Martin would have been a brilliant Jane. I feel already she has been miscast. She was brilliant in Bleak house, and North and South, and is truly suited to period dramas. She is a very natural actress, and has huge screen presence. I hope she comes to the fore in this and continues her popular rise.
I am dissapointed that Jane is being played by an american. I just find it embarrasing…
