Jane Austen on Dating

Filed under: Jane in the News — Mags @ 11:46 pm

Lori Smith wrote to tell us about an article that she wrote about how modern singles find what they are looking for in Jane Austen rather than real life.

And yet, something else is going on here, too. Of course there’s more to Austen, with her wry wit and pitch-perfect dialog and the way she revealed the foibles and fumbling of every level of society from her perch in the Hampshire countryside. But I think there’s something more that draws us to her characters, and to her heroes, more specifically. And that’s character. Not character as in country gentlemen perfectly drawn, but as in strong moral character—as in caring about whether or not one’s behavioral patterns are faulty and may need a bit of harsh correction, and growing to love that correction because it makes you a stronger and better person.

As the Editrix approaches middle age, she has discovered that she is quite content in her single state, tho’ she still enjoys the occasional mushy romance.

Alert Janeite Lorna wrote to tell us that equilter.com is selling fabric inspired by the quilt made by Jane Austen, her sister and their mother, which is displayed at Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton.

We also saw a link on the Janeites e-mail list to a site that has a larger selection of the Austen-inspired fabrics.

More on Region 1 P&P3 DVD

Seems there are some discrepancies on the R1 release date…several sites are reporting the release date as February 28 rather than March 14.

DVD Times has a list of the extras, which does not look as extensive as the extras for the R2 disc.

$29.95 seems rather expensive for a single DVD, doesn’t it?

See you in the funny pages

Mike Carey, an award-winning comic book writer (no, seriously) is discovering the Joys of Jane:

I’m getting hooked on Jane Austen: you know the “Pride & Prejiduce” [sic] series that the BBC did years ago? I just watched that again and I really had a blast with it. I’m now working my way through all the adaptations of 18th and 19th century novels that I can get my hands on. I’m enjoying that a lot.

If your favorite comic book heroine starts talking about being excessively diverted, you’ll know what to blame.
