“I Love You Because” to begin rehearsals

I Love You Because, a modern musical adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, begins rehearsals today.

“Set in New York City, I Love You Because follows Austin Bennet (Hanlon), a young greeting card writer whose life is turned upside down when he finds his long-term girlfriend in bed with another man. Forced back out into the treacherous New York dating scene, Austin meets Marcy Fitzwilliams (Alvin), a flighty photographer whose spontaneity is matched only by her ability to drive him insane. This new musical comedy explores the ‘rules’ and nuances of dating and learning how to love someone, not in spite of their differences, but because of them,” according to press notes for the musical, which features book and lyrics by Ryan Cunningham and music by Joshua Salzman.

Previews begin January 19 at off-Broadway’s Village Theater in New York City. Opening night is February 14 — quite appropriate. Tickets are available here.

As always, AustenBlog welcomes reader reviews.

I might have to go see this. I keep complaining there are no JA plays close enough to me…but it’s down in the Village, what a pain. How far is that from Penn Station via cab?

  2. Julie P. Says:

It’s at 158 Bleecker Street at Thompson, a couple of blocks south of Washington Square. It’s further away from Penn than is the theater where we saw Northanger Abbey.

  3. Karenlee Says:

Sounds like it could be a good romp, but a bit of a stretch that it’s being touted as a version of P&P. The essence of that wonderful book is about the willingness to change, and re-evaluate your (mistaken) impressions of people. NOT about learning how to love someone because of their differences.

  4. Mags Says:

Well, if I’m paying $65 for a ticket, I guess I can suck it up and pay cab fare from Penn Station to the Village. :)

  5. Jessica Says:

Based on the discription, it doesn’t sound much like it is based on P&P. Mags you must tell us what you think after you see it. I’m finding it hard to reconcile this play’s plot with our P&P.

  6. Bronteana Says:

Mags! My email address is not letting me sign in but I have to tell you the news about the upcoming Emma musical.

The composer says he will be recording the demo in late January, and shortly after some of it will be available on his website, http://www.indieclectic.com

    :)

There’s also a bit of discussion on what his favourite versions of Emma are.
