Persuasion is Movie of the Day at IMDB
Persuasion is the Movie of the Day at IMDB — catch it while you can, because as Miz Scarlett said, tomorrow is another day.
From the writeup:
Romantic comedies, British style, enjoyed a renaissance in the ’90s thanks primarily to a newfound ardor for one of Britain’s most famous novelists, Jane Austen. A master (or is that mistress?) of British social mores, Our Miss Austen could navigate through society and matters of the heart like a minesweeper on a particularly bad battlefield. Mixing sharp comedy with social satire and a big dollop of romance, Austen’s comedies took a bit of a torturous path getting to their happy endings, but her protagonists never lost their moxie or their strength; they’re truly modern heroines. While Gwyneth Paltrow made an appropriately nosy Emma and the dynamic duo of Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet provided the charm and charisma for Sense and Sensibility, the best of the recent Austen adaptations was 1995’s bittersweet Persuasion, a little-seen but much-loved BBC production that made a splash in American theaters. Amanda Root is the suitably shy and oppressed heroine who comes to realize that the man she loved and gave up–after being told she could find a more suitable match–might in fact be the one she was meant for all the time. This charming comedy put director Roger Michell on the map, the man who later guided Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts over Notting Hill.

Glad to see Jane, Persuasion and Amanda Root getting their due, though sadly no mention of the fantastic Ciaran Hinds as Wentworth. He had me slobbering in a most unbecoming way. I would actaully like to see this one redone again, not to surpass this sweet adaptation but because it is my favorite Jane novel. Oh–my only beef with this version is the way Anne runs after Wentworth in the music hall while everyone watches, chased by Mr. Elliot. Not in the book and rather gauche for shy Anne Elliot.

As long as Andrew Davies keeps his sex-obsessed mitts off it, I can live with a new adaptation.

I love P2 but I don’t like the way they changed Mr. Elliot’s story. It doesn’t even make sense–if he’s broke, why would he want to inherit an encumbered estate?
I do love the film, though. I love all the little moments in it that convinced me that those involved really knew (and, I think, loved) the book.
I don’t mind the idea of a new movie, though at first I thought, “Why?” but then I figured, “Why not?”
Julie, I think Davies is not involved with the new Persuasion. They are making his NA script. However, the film is “in development” so who knows who they will hire to write the bally thing.

Wentworth, schmentworth! How could they not mention what a delectable weasel Sam West was as the aforementioned Mr. Elliot?

Oh Yes, Mr. Elliot was good and slimey, but I agree they gave short shift to Mrs. Smith’s story and no plausible motive for Mr. Elliot. The story of unresolved West Indies land holding deserves to be told!

Oh, dare I hope they are adapting Persuasion for the big screen. I did love the BBC version and Cirian Hines and Sam West were very good. It would be wonderful to bring this story to the big screen.
I was at the library this afternoon and the librarian was gushing because a teenage girl had been in asking for books by Jane Austen. Life is good.
Thanks for this information!

Mimi, ITV in the UK is doing a television movie–presumably two hours or so. Not “big screen.”

While we are discussing the 95 version of Persuasion I would like to point out a beautiful music video that someone (at the website I have linked below) did of this version of Persuasion. I feel like crying for joy every time I watch it. The song is perfect! They chose wonderful clips to play throughout the song.

Thanks Mags, I will alert my friend in the UK. I was able recently to see North and South done by the BBC. It was wonderful. Thanks for this info I will be on alert. Unfortunately A&E no longer picks up the BBC series, sad news indeed.
