New Millennium Darcy

Filed under: Pride and Prejudice (2005) — Mags @ 3:54 pm

We post this in the knowledge that Certain Parties have wanted to see it… :D

The latest issue of the Jane Austen Centre at Bath’s e-mail newsletter came out today, including a link to an interview with Matthew Macfadyen that was included in the latest issue of Jane Austen’s Regency World magazine. We liked the ending, where he tells the Janeites in the most gentlemanly sort of manner possible that he is taking some time off–and may read some more Austen during his break. (We recommend Emma, as Mr. Macfadyen may recognize himself in a certain country gentleman.)

Interesting that he thinks Darcy acted the way he did because he was shy; I remember Colin Firth thought so as well.

Aww! That is adorable…I never thought that Darcy’s shyness would have such an impact on how he acts. Hmmm, I think I was wrong.

Thank you - enjoyed reading this. However, I must point out that there has been at least one other make-up free, muddy skirted, not squeaky-clean Austen adaptation before - the glorious 1995 film of Persuasion!

Really, Amy P? Colin Firth acted the way he did because he thought Darcy was shy? Wow, either CF did a bad job of what he meant to do or I just never realized it, b/c I never got the impression that CF’s Darcy was shy. I easily saw shyness in MM’s Darcy though. Or maybe that was b/c I knew he meant to portray Darcy that way.
Both guys thought Darcy acted the way he did b/c he was shy, but did any of you get that impression from the book? I never, but I guess I could be oblivious.
