New Region 2 Jane Austen film box set available

Filed under: Screen — Mags @ 12:27 am

Alert Janeite Carol wrote to tell us about a new Region 2 DVD box set of Jane Austen films available for preorder on Amazon. It is unclear what films are included in the set, but judging by the cover, at least P&P2 and MP1.

Perhaps it is the six-disc set available in the U.S. plus other BBC-produced goodies–P&P2 and Emma3, we’re guessing.

    In BBCShop, it said:
    Pride And Prejudice
    Sense And Sensibilit
    Northanger Abbey
    Emma
    Persuasion

total in 9 Disc and 1225 mins

Are you sure it’s not the same boxed set that came out in Region 1 last year? That just has the “1s.” And, in the case where we’ve had missing minutes in earlier versions, those minutes have been restored.

  3. Mags Says:

Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle are on the cover, so it includes P&P2 at least. Also it’s more expensive than the set of 1s, and more discs.

This site gives more information about each DVD that is included in the set.

    So that makes:

    - P&P2
    - S&S1
    - MP1
    - NA (since we only have one of that :( )
    - E1
    - P2

Only 4 of the “1s”, since it doesn’t have P1 (which is a Granada Production originally, not BBC) and P&P1. [I'm sorry for those of you on the R2 side of the pond].

BTW, E3 is not a BBC production, but Meridien. IRRC, BBC was planning to produce one in the 1990’s, but then along came E2 and E3 from others. I wonder if they [BBC] will defrost that idea and give us E4 (that -like S&S3- I would also be willing to see it, if it is as long as E1, and this coming from a JN fan :-)).

  6. Julie P. Says:

Some of us R2′ers have R2-capable players!

  7. Mags Says:

    I do! :-)

But I already have the 2s on DVD. Oh well. I guess I’ll get the American set with the 1s. I think I’ll buy it for myself for Christmas. Still have to get S&S2 on DVD, too.

  8. Sonja Says:

I think in BBC-Shop they promote this set for 3 month or so. But I don’t like it because I wanted the 1’s in a box. The 2’s I bought when they came out. Who needs a mixed set?

And the most DVD players can be made regionfree. There is no problem with the regions.

  9. Mags Says:

My older DVD player couldn’t be hacked, but my newer one could. :) I have a few Region 2s I watch on that one. If you’re into European films that never come out here, there’s no other way to go.

Mags, you won’t regret owning S&S2 on DVD. The commentaries are terrific.
