Something other than P&P news? Impossible!

Filed under: Housekeeping — Tasha @ 9:39 am

Friends, Readers, Janeites:

In all the fever and frenzy that has accompanied the release of P&P2005, we’d like to remind you that not only has Our Dear Jane written five other novels, as well as a plethora of short stories and letters, but other artists besides famous actors have taken note of them! Please take some time to check out the panel to the right of your screen and look at some other Austen-related books/events that are “On The Street” or “In the Works.”

For example:
The Cambridge University Press has a fab new site listing all their publications by and about Austen.
The latest Jane Austen Mystery will most certainly be a good and intriguing read!
If reading isn’t your thing, you can always go for the BBC Austen collection, now out on DVD.

There’s so much out there, both in your local library/movie rental store, and on the internet. Amuse yourself with the exploits of Emma Woodhouse rather than Keira Knightley, and remind yourselves again why Henry Tilney will be a more lively clergyman than Edmund Bertram. We’re not asking you to forget about the new film, only to remember that there was more to Austen than “truths universally acknowledged” and “dearest, loveliest Elizabeths.”

Thank you all again for all the support and feedback you give. It’s so much fun working here, and hearing from all of you makes it even better!

Thank you for reminding us about all the other good work Jane Austen has done! I myself got a little bit tired of the fact that no one seemed to talk about other things than P&P anymore. Don’t get me wrong: I LOVE P&P and can talk about it for hours. But I love all the other works of Jane Austen as much as P&P, some of her books I like even better perhaps, and it sometimes bothered me that people hardly ever spoke about Emma or S&S (for example) anymore. (I mean on forums, etc.)
Perhaps there’s a difference between Janeites and fans of P&P?

You’ve hit the nail on the head there. Someone should start a blog devoted to that very question.

P&P is in the theaters (or will be for many). That generates interest. The last time S&S and Emma were in the theaters were 1995 and 1996 respectively. Back then, the word blog wasn’t even invented. It’s just normal to have discussions about whatever is currently being adapted. But wiser still to keep in mind that Jane wrote more than just one book :-) Perhaps with the generated P&P interests, other Jane books will be adapted into feature films soon. Personally I’d love to see Persuation adapted.

I like P2 fine enough. I thought CH and AR were great. ‘Emma’ was alright (never really partial towards Gwyneth but overall, love the movie - ditto ET and S+S2). I’d love to see a new adaptation of NA though. There’s only one so far, right ?

Hee hee. Poor Tasha. It gets overwhelming, doesn’t it? Well, Mags is back and fresh with firsthand Jane-worship and I’m ready for it.

    Also, what she said.

Shall I throw down a gauntlet? Here goes:

Tilney rules and Darcy drools!

P.S. No need to re-adapt Persuasion…maybe a tenth-anniversary P2 DVD with author and actor commentary, perhaps.

I admit that I’m more of a Tilney-ite myself. I’m happy for another chance for Austen to be on the big screen, but why won’t they ever do Northanger Abbey? NA doesn’t even have a movie adaptation! (not counting the dreadful ’80’s one!)
