The P&P3 Daily News Roundup II: Electric Boogaloo
(Yes, we know this is way later than II, but we couldn’t resist the obvious and rather clichéd pop culture reference for the title.)
KeiraWeb.com has picture and clips from various appearances related to the U.K. premiere on September 5.
Hello! magazine has some pics and a short article about the premiere.
Matthew Macfadyen, along with fellow cast members Rosamund Pike and Jena Malone, attended a regional premiere of the film in Manchester, and had a chat with Manchester Online.
Matthew said: “I don’t mind the tag of heart-throb because I don’t really know what it means. It doesn’t change my life in any way.
“If I was Robbie Williams and couldn’t walk out the door it would bother me, but to me it’s just another tag.
“For a while I was simply known as Matthew `Spooks’ Macfadyen, and now it will be this, but in the end it just goes away. It’s exciting to take something like this on.
“The reason you become an actor is because you want to play parts like Mr Darcy.”
Contactmusic.com reveals that the actresses in P&P3 wore no makeup and that Joe Wright thought Keira and Rosamund were good sports for allowing themselves to be covered with mud..
And Ray Bennett (!) of the Hollywood Reporter previewed the film at the Toronto Film Festival and was not impressed.
Director Joe Wright and screenwriter Deborah Moggach seem to have confused Austen with the Bronte sisters, as their story pits star-crossed lovers against a backdrop of fierce landscapes and harsh storms. By robbing the story of its intricate framework of late 18th century social observation, the love affair descends into ponderous melodrama.
Another reviewer fails to understand the importance of Gritty RealismTM.
Jenny Colgan says, “ANOTHER Austen adaptation?” at Scotsman.com.
And the tagline, in case you’re an idiot, is: “Sometimes the last person on earth you want to be with is the one person you can’t be without” - which makes it sound like a buddy movie featuring a cop and a chimp.

Ray Bennett I fear is very right.
I appreciate the fact, that there seem to be a at least a few journalists who know enough of the matter to NOT storm about “old maids”, “empty plots” and “Mr. Darcy in a dripping shirt”.
September 10th, 2005 at 5:47 pm
Jenny Colgan rocks my socks just for the chimp mention!
September 10th, 2005 at 7:28 pm
” Austen is not a great romantic novelist”
Not? Oh dear… now I have to change my whole opinion.. my world lies in pieces now!
First a pig, now a chimp, maybe it’s a movie about the animal kingdom?
Maybe we just print shirts:
“We love Gritty RealismTM!”
and wear them to the premiere all over the world.

Wow I just finished watching the P&P diaries and I think I’m going to cry. How lovely they all seem to get on. Now more than ever I am sooo ready to watch Joe Wright’s “painting”.
September 10th, 2005 at 9:35 pm
Vee/ I saw that too!!! I almost cried over Darcy’s almost invisible smile when he sees Lizzy home after the second proposal. This Darcy, he’s really heartbreaking, isn’t he? Oh, I loved the general look of the film. With the cast so talented and friendly, with a director that sensitive, this film just cannot go wrong. I finally decided to put a stop to all these “peekings”. I will patiently wait until I can fully embrace the enormous impact the film is sure to bring to me and I’ll watch the big screen without even blinking and I’ll just laugh, sigh, squee and cry like a baby.

Love your idea, Kerstin!

Maybe we just print shirts:
“We love Gritty RealismTM!”
and wear them to the premiere all over the world.
That’s the spirit!
September 10th, 2005 at 11:08 pm
I STILL cannot watch the diaries *cry out loud*. What IS wrong with my Media Player ?
September 10th, 2005 at 11:54 pm
I loved the P&P diaries! I especially enjoyed how close the Bennets seemed to be. They really looked like a family, didn’t they?
And the dancing and the proposal scenes… Oh my.. I’m going to be crying my eyes out by the time he proposes for the second time.

Liz/ What about updates? Did you check if it’s the latest version? Sometimes it helps.
September 11th, 2005 at 12:26 am
Not-so-computer-savvy-me am not sure how to do so
Should I check online ? What’s the site I should go to ?
September 11th, 2005 at 12:32 am
Liz/ Go here and download the Windows media 10. Just click the download link and if a popup opens, click yes. The previous version will automatically be taken care of. Make sure you have windows XP, right?

Thanks very much, Jen. Trying to download now. Hopefully it’ll work.
September 11th, 2005 at 6:44 am
It was noticeable that Kitty and Lydia didn’t wear make-up, but a very little would have gone a long way
September 11th, 2005 at 7:16 am
Uh, now I’ve read Mr. Bennet’s article! Objections, Sir!
All right, at least I’ve learned:
Not all rainy weather is gothic!
Rainy weather, storm, pigs and chickens in the backyard, mud and no make-up = gritty realism ( mhm, if you leave out the make-up, pirates of the caribbean is gritty realism, too! :D)
And now it’s gothic!
Well, a new thing to be learned… if the sun is shining, it’s an Austen adaption.. if it’s raining it must be Bronte!
Lady Catherine has imho not much screentime. Far from it, I thought, she was less on the screen than she deserves.
But yes, Mr. Wickham has no time to win Elizabeth’s heart. He’s handsome.. but that’s all.
But there are more hints, why it is important for the girls to marry a wealthy man. I really liked the open words of Charlotte when telling Lizzy her reasons to marry Mr. Collins.
Let’s face it, many of the people, who will see this movie, won’t get the point why it is important to marry during that time.

You’re right, Kerstin - I for one can safely vouch for the audience here. Like they’re really going to ‘care’ that Jane puts her arms on the table or why Mr Collins addresses Mrs Bennett instead of Mr Bennett for an audience with Lizzy or why Mr Collins chooses breakfast time to request it - I’m pretty sure that they might not even notice the ‘discrepancies’. I know quite a number of people are not ‘happy’ with that but maybe it’s “better” to have those ‘liberties’ - so the movie is more accessible to those who’re not familiar with JA’s works (there are plenty here ;)). We’ve got an excellent miniseries - maybe it’s time to let others to enjoy this great story too.
Sorry, had to have my say - so before I ‘duck for cover’
Jen, either the computer refuses to download Window Player 10 or the Player refuses to be downloaded, I don’t know - but it doesn’t work
Perhaps I’ll be able to use the computer at work tomorrow *crosses fingers* and see that almost invisible smile
September 11th, 2005 at 12:15 pm
Just saw the P&P diaries on TV (on Sky Movies in the UK) and I thought it was better than the film! I wish I had seen it first - might have left me with a more favourable impression of the film
September 11th, 2005 at 5:05 pm
so this “diaries” you’re all talking about…this was only on tv? Liz, what are you trying to download? i think i missed something! make haste! i should not want to miss yet another opportunity to watch as many clips as possible
September 11th, 2005 at 5:12 pm
Yes, the P&P diaries was a documentary on British TV, but it’s available online as well. There’s even a new behind the scenes documentary now, but I haven’t seen that one yet.
Anyway, both documentaries are available at http://www.keiraweb.com
September 11th, 2005 at 9:51 pm
Mary/ Thanks for alerting me to “behind the scenes”. I almost melted when Darcy is in the rain telling Lizzie he is “sorry for taking up so much of your time”!!!!!
Move over CF, there is plenty of room for MM’s version in my book.
September 11th, 2005 at 11:44 pm
I teared up SO bad when watching the Diaries & Behind the scenes footage! I wonder what I’ll be like when I actually watch the movie!!!
September 12th, 2005 at 12:08 am
Just watched the part 4 of the Pride & Prejudice Revisited, ITV1 on KeiraWeb again and my eyes are still. I love the ending where mr. bennet asks “you really do love him, don’t you?” and Lizzie says “very much” it just melts my heart!! Keira captures the feelings of Lizzie for Darcy!
But odd now I think of it - Mr. Bennet’s teeth are too white! Weird!
September 12th, 2005 at 5:25 am
Yay! I got it - i mean - the diaries! Just watched #2 - and yes, THAT smile is worth staying back after work just to download it! Bye - off to watch the rest
September 12th, 2005 at 4:01 pm
Hej you P&P lovers out there, you have got to see the part four of the P&P Revisited (aka “behind the scenes”). The short scene when Mr. Darcy comes into the room finds Lizzy there and stands uncomfortably until creeking door alerts him that someone just came in and scares him into leaving. Precious!!:-)
I just found out that it comes out here in the end of January!!!! So no one whine over there about November US release.;-)
September 12th, 2005 at 5:33 pm
Well, unfortunately you can’t see what he’s done before he heads out of the room.
He looks quite funny… ( but I won’t tell you why! :p ) NO SPOILERS!
Ehem.. one thing about the teeth… do we REALLY want to see teeth like Captain Barbossa’s? I mean.. well, gritty realism… but… ehm.. no.. I can really do it without it!
September 12th, 2005 at 9:47 pm
Kerstin/ That’s not fair stop teasing and tell me what happens, everyone else can close their eyes. I can’t wait until October to find out, and anyway I’ll still watch it a thousand times over when it does.
September 13th, 2005 at 2:45 am
Do you mean when he says: “It’s been a pleasure” when it was more like a sheer torture? Or do you mean he does something while exiting vicarage (because I assume this is where the scene takes place). The creeking door - is it Mrs. Collins coming back? And does the scene end with the clip from the trailer when Mrs. Collins says to Lizzy: “What have you done to poor Mr. Darcy?”
And do I sound as desperate as I am to see this movie???:-)
As you can see, I’m puting this movie together like a jiggsaw puzzle and probably make it better (in my mind’s eye) than it actually is. I’m seriously considering going for a weekend to Germany just to see it three months earlier, but they ususally dub films over there so it would be quite hard for me to understand the dialogue. I’m currently in Poland.
No one mentioned it yet so I would like to let you know that there is another site:
http://java.europe.yahoo.com/uk/uip/prideandprejudice/site/flashSite.htm
where you can see at least two new clips if you click on “Pride” and then on “Mr. Darcy” and then on Caroline Bingley you will see a short clip with Lizzy and Darcy. Also if you click on Mr. Bingley there is a new clip there although not as good (aka revealing).:-)
September 13th, 2005 at 7:26 am
All right, Vee… so, everone who doesn’t want know it, please close your eyes.

Or Mrs Gardiner… I’m not sure.
He comes into the room, standing around in the most foolish manor. Strangling his poor gloves mercilessly….
I remembered Mr. Firth sitting in the parlor telling stupid things about the interior.. but McFadyens standing around not knowing what to say oder what to do was hilarious. It’s actually nobody at the door, the noise only gives him the opportunity to escape…
But Mrs Bennet doesn’t say “What have you done to poor Mr. Darcy?”
I’m sorry, but I forgot, who said it, but I think, it was Charlotte Collins…
I’m afraid we don’t have original version in the German cinemas. Unfortunately it’s all dubbed. Some cinemas may have the OV.. but they are rare. In Hamburg at the special screening the dubbing was not finished yet, so we saw the OV with subtitles.
September 13th, 2005 at 7:28 am
Ups… of course it’s not manor.. ( me and my English… *blush*)
The correct word is manner.
September 13th, 2005 at 9:15 am
Thanks Kerstin I’d love to know more, but I won’t spoil it for the rest.
I’ve been trying to piece together all the clips as well. I’m getting more and more excited with each little piece of the puzzle.
September 13th, 2005 at 9:39 pm
Vee / “Forgive me for taking up so much of your time” gets to me too - BIG time! And did you notice that ‘lil slight movement of his head when he said the the words ‘.. your time’ ?
September 14th, 2005 at 5:06 am
Anonymous/ I do now thanks, it’ll give another reason to watch that bit for the millionth time!!!
I’ve been too busy looking at his lips and eyes. We’re very sad creatures aren’t we?
