S.E. Hinton: Friend of Jane

Filed under: F.O.J. (Friends of Jane) — Mags @ 12:58 am

Alert Janeite Sarah wrote to tell us about a New York Times profile of S.E. Hinton, the author of The Outsiders and other young adult novels (which the Editrix adored when she was a young lady) in which Ms. Hinton says she “rereads Jane Austen annually.”

I, too, devoured Hinton novels, especially the Outsiders, while in my teens. ;) I can still see the worn cover of my book, the poster of the film version boasting a sterling cast. Matt Dillon, Rob Rowe, Ralph Macchio…was Patrick Swayze in it too?

I’d love to read the book, having heard so much about it. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a copy - don’t have that really wide collection of books at bookstores here where I live :( but I’m always on the lookout especially at secondhand bookshops so hopefully I’ll be able to read it someday :)

Oh, Patrick Swayze was in the movie - haven’t seen it either but read about it. And I came across an article in a magazine saying that Francis Ford Coppola has come up with a DVD version of the movie called “The Outsiders:The Complete Novel” recently. Have you got it ?

I love The Outsiders! My sisters and I each have our own copy of the book. I have a hardback and paperback of it. Yes, Patrick Swayze was in that film as well as Tom Cruise. They are releasing a new edition of that film on DVD this fall. It will include the extra scenes that were filmed, but didn’t make the final cut for the original video. I believe there will also be interviews with the actors. As a side note, S.E. Hinton was the nurse in Dallas’ room in the hospital for the film.
