“Handsome ruggedness”

ContactMusic.com has the latest on Keira Knightley’s opinion of Macfadyen as Darcy.

She says, “Matthew’s a man who is sexy in the mode of Richard Burton and Alan Rickman. You need to see that kind of rugged beauty in Darcy, to know that here is a man who strides across fields, climbs trees and very much manages his own estate.

“With Matthew you can see that etched across his face, yet he’s also got this extraordinary vulnerability. On the page, Darcy reads as being very cold, but Matthew is so vulnerable through his big manliness that he gives Darcy extra qualities.”

We here at Austenblog World Headquarters are certain that this is Miss Knightley’s completely honest and forthright opinion, and has nothing whatsoever to do with publicity for the film.

She definitely gets Mr. Macfadyen’s charm, it seems. :-) But I’m sensing we are going to see that exact phrase over and over again, ’cause it’s right off the production notes.

  2. Gabby Says:

    Hee! “Big manliness.” Heeheeheehee!

  3. Liz Says:

I keep seeing only interviews with Keira so far. I wish the journalists would focus on other cast too.

  4. Mags Says:

    Gabby! *falls over laughing*

  5. Jen Says:

Gabby and Mags/ Oh, you girls….ROFL

  6. Jane Says:

    Mr Darcy climb trees??

  7. Jessica Says:

I’m convinced that they made up the phrase “rugged beauty” the same day they made up “gritty realism”. They just decided to have Keira say that one instead of putting it in the production notes. LOL :) I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of… whats the word?… Shabby shiek in this one. I’m still looking forward to it with great anticiplation though. How can I not? They’ve already got some great buzz words! I’m sure “gritty realism” and “rugged beauty” will be on the tips of everyones tongues! LOL

One does wish they had spelt Mr. Macfadyen’s name correctly. </proofreader>

Perhaps you meant to say “shabby chic”, referring to the gritty realism of the wardrobe selections? Though if, as well could be feared, they have also made Darcy more “gritty”, then “shabby shiek” might correctly apply to him. (Climbing trees??? I don’t think so.)

By the time this CHICK FLICK is released we shall ALL be thoroughly sick of hearing about it. Time now to cleanse my brain with a weekend P&P2 marathon.

  10. Mags Says:

Shabby chic is actually pretty. *meow*

    At least I think so.

It precludes dirt, incidentally; in fact, the Queen of Shabby Chic, Rachel Ashwell, likes white furniture! It might have a few chips in it, but it isn’t dirty. It’s just not treated like a museum piece.

  11. Kerstin Says:

Mhm, there weren’t any tree-climbing scenes in this movie, I asure you.
Doesn’t a wet shirt suffice your demand of a shabby chic? ;)
