Today we are all British

Filed under: Housekeeping — Mags @ 11:14 pm

It was too horrible a confusion of guilt, too gross a complication of evil, for human nature, not in a state of utter barbarism, to be capable of! - Mansfield Park, Volume III Chapter X

Have mercy oh gracious Father! upon all that are now suffering from whatever cause, that are in any circumstance of danger or distress. Give them patience under every affliction, strengthen, comfort and relieve them. - From a prayer written by Jane Austen

Our thoughts are with our British friends at this time. We are all admiration of the stiff upper lips we’ve seen displayed thus far. If you will forgive an American vulgarity from your Editrix: Y’all rock.

My heart sank this morning when my radio came on at 6:00 am and I heard the announcer say, “London terrorist attacks.” I have been dreading this day since 9/11, yet hoping and praying it would never happen.

    My most sincere condolences.

I’m going to the UK in three weeks time.. I wasn’t actually planning to go to London, but now I think I will. Living out here in the sticks, I sort of miss those daily trips on the tube and buses that I used to complain about when I was a London commuter.

I talked to several family members who were in town yesterday and it seems things were more or less back to normal by the afternoon; they had to be, since there are at least 10 million people in London on a daily basis who need to get home.

I read an excellent book on the home front in the second world war (The People’s War by Angus Calder.) The author estimated that if London had continued to be bombed at the intensity of the blitz, it would have taken a hundred years to half destroy the city. Puts the efforts of the IRA, Al Quaeda etc. in perspective…

Blessings on all our friends across the pond. As someone else on TV said yesterday, Londoners and the country will not be beaten down — it is, after all, GREAT Britain.

I really don’t know what to say…it’s too terrible these things keep happening. I do hope hate won’t breed another hate. My sincerest condolences to the victims and their families. Today it’s raining hard here and my thoughts are with you in London.
