Macfadyen: Darcy is “heartbreaking”

The Independent interview with Matthew Macfadyen gives us this glimpse into Macfadyen’s view of the inner workings of Mr. Darcy.

“He’s rather heartbreaking, Darcy,” he reveals. “They say Darcy is haughty and arrogant, but that comes from vulnerability, from thinking very deeply about things and not being able to be relaxed. In those days Mr and Mrs Bennet were totally naff, and nowadays they think, oh what a snob, but in those days he wasn’t being a snob. He was being honourable.”

(Naff? Huh? Ah, UK slang for not stylish or fashionable.)

So we have a heartbreaking, vulnerable Darcy coming to us in September. I’m trying very hard to remain all bookish and objective and “But is it true to the text?” and mature as a good Cub Reporter should. I’m failing miserably.

I’m sensing that Macfadyen may make me forget Bo Bice. ;-)

  2. Julie Bertrand Says:

For the first time in my rather young life, I want it to be September already. And I was not able to restrain myself: I squealed rather loudly. Thank God the roommates are gone. But I think they may suspect something because they have started calling me Gollum, arguing that I keep making strange sounds when I’m using my computer. Ooops.

  3. Christine Says:

Thank goodness I am not the only one who blushes and smiles when I see Matthew Macfadyen in the trailer (the short and long version). Don’t worry, my friends refer to me as “litte hobbit”…the new movie seems to be my precious.

  4. Catherine Says:

Yeah, that made me weep. (I think, in pain)

    :)

  5. Mags Says:

Oh, go ahead and squee. You’re among friends. :-)

  6. Jen Says:

I saw In My Father’s Den last night. I can assure you all…we’ve got THE perfect Darcy ever imaginable. Macfadyen can break your heart to pieces and he is sexy and gorgeous to boot. Amazing, amazing film. Impossible to erase from your memory. Don’t miss it.

  7. Jen Says:

oh! I forgot to squee…. He’s gonna be one h*ll of a heartbreaking Darcy. Hurray! Life IS wonderful.

  8. Christine Says:

    I think I will squee after all….

  9. Anna Says:

Oh good I wasn’t the only one going all girly about Matthew MacFadyen as Darcy in the trailers. I wish In My Father’s Den was playing in a theater near by me. I’ve heard such praise about it and I do want to see MacFadyen acting.

I find myself watching the short and long trailers of P&P everyday. My son comes home from school and says, “Mom, do you want to watch your movie again?” and he goes right into the trailer. I wish it were September, for I feel this P&P version will be just perrfect. I love B&B’s version, and watch it on DVD,Colin F. is just a handsome devil, but I think MacFadyen will do nicely.
    til September!

    pp,yeah!!!

After watching P&P2, I thought that there can be no other P&P that can top it. It was thorough almost perfect to Jane’s work. Colin to me was just the ultimate Mr. Darcy. Good looking, tall, with the sort of rich-snobbish look to him that gave his role 5 tars to me! After hearing about this new P&P3 i thought, omg, it will not even come close to 2. Well after watching the trailer, I just may be wrong. At first i thught MacFadyen didn’t even come close to CF, but after watching the trailer about 20 times..hehe..he started to grow on me with his smoldering eyes and compassionatelooks he gives. I think 3will have what 2 lacked, passion and more interaction with Elizabeth and Darcy. Thye seem to be more intimate in 3…which is what we long for in this movie, right? So, i believe even though it will be a two hour movie, it will give us nothing ahhhs at the end with a big humongous smile:)
    I cannot wait.

At first, i vowed never to watch the new Pride and Prejudice; i thought that it was only a very unwelcome intrusion - after all, how could one possibly compare 1995’s to any other? And Colin Firth as Darcy… he was my very first crush. however, after begrudgingly watching the trailer, i hate to admit that Matthew Macfadyen is growing on me. He seems to have mastered the trademark “smoldering stare” and even got the swagger. I must say that I’m counting down the days until September.

  14. Sian Says:

Am so excited about the new film. Having seen Matthew Macfadyen in several roles I know he will have done an amazing job as Darcy. He ripped my heart to pieces in Spooks, Warriors, Wuthering Heights and was fantastically regal in Henry IV. Haven’t seen In My Father’s Den, but have pre-ordered the DVD - that’s how much I trust him!

I’ve got a still from the film as my computer background, and have repeatedly watched the trailer. That look he gives when she turns him down - I go weak at the knees every time!
