Way to conquer the stereotype, Colin

Filed under: Screen — Mags @ 1:07 pm

Colin Firth has declined to participate in a BBC documentary about P&P2, according to contactmusic.com.

Firth was a relative unknown until he played the aloof aristocrat in the BBC’s period drama, and has often complained fans and casting directors won’t let him move past his Darcy character.

We are moved to quote the well-known social critic, Miss Bridget Jones:

It struck me as pretty ridiculous to be called Mr. Darcy and to stand on your own looking snooty at a party. It’s like being called Heathcliff and insisting on spending the entire evening in the garden, shouting “Cathy” and banging your head against a tree.

Of course, Mr. Firth’s “people” say that he’s simply too busy to participate, which could be very much the case, and one would not wish to be prejudiced about his motivation, would one? ;-)

Besides, the big news out of that tidbit is a documentary on P&P2! All you Firth!Darcy fans (you know who you are) complaining about P&P3 have something new to obsess over. ;-)

Poor Colin, he’s clearly had enough of Darcy in one lifetime. :) Hang in there, Colin, Matthew’s on the rescue.

I’m so thrilled to hear about this making of P&P docu, but it still seems like a little odd project. Why do they want to do a documentary on P&P2 now? Is it the new film coming out?

Oh Colin, get over yourself. Where precisely do you think you’d be without without that dripping linen shirt?

  3. Mags Says:

Now, now. He could be busy; and most likely he is, since he had enough of a sense of humor about it to do not one but two Bridget Jones movies, after all. You know I can’t resist an opportunity to tease the fangirls. ;-)

I agree with you, Julie. Although I personally never saw the appeal of Colin Firth as wet shirt sex god, I believe that he would still be regulated to Masterpiece Theater hell without it. Sometimes actors must do these things to keep their fan base. I know that none of us really think that the Star Trek actors wanted to be trapped in convention purgatory for the rest of their lives, but they did it to make a living and it guaranteed them some sort of income. One of these days Colin might very well wish he would have appeased his fans just a little more.

Oooh. Y’all are just trying to pick a fight now.

    *makes popcorn*

A funny thing is, CF was there at the UK premiere of MM’s new movie, ‘In My Father’s Den’. Checking up the new Darcy, eh, Colin? :-)
