A teen reviews PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

Filed under: Jane in the News — Mags @ 3:47 pm

TeenInk.com has a short but quite perceptive review of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, by a teen for teens.

For anyone who loves this type of book, this excellent novel will stay in your hands from the moment you pick it up until you reach the romantic conclusion. The plot and characters draw the reader into a world where a person’s acquaintances depend on social status and connections, and there are rare times when a person marries for true love, but that is the case in Pride and Prejudice.

Though we are usually quick to disparage reviews that compare any of Jane Austen’s novels to “chick-lit,” in this case we are willing to forgive, as the reviewer is attempting to attract readers of such books to read Jane. Rather like putting cheese sauce on broccoli, one supposes. ;-)

Ahh, but cheese sauce on broccoli is such a, um, nutritious metaphor. How about putting rings in pigs noses? Oops, I don’t think that works. Hmmm, bandages on bloody knees? Nope. Well, I suppose cheese sauce on broccoli will have to do. ;-)

Oh, and by the way, I liked the review (I’m sure that’s a shocking news flash, but I had to say it).

Well, I meant cheese sauce on broccoli in the sense of getting persons to eat broccoli who might not normally, as the reviewer used a comparison to “chick lit” to get readers to read P&P who might not normally. In other cases, the ring in the pig’s nose might apply!

You mean, it might apply since they don’t understand or appreciate what they are getting? A hearty “Yes!” to that. I think my post was inspired because I thought broccoli and Jane Austen shouldn’t be really that related (because I don’t like broccoli even with cheese sauce, and I like Jane Austen all by herself).
