Joanna Trollope: I’m good, Jane Austen is great

Filed under: F.O.J. (Friends of Jane), Jane in the News — Mags @ 10:33 pm

The Independent has a Q&A with novelist Joanna Trollope. One of the questions asked how Ms. Trollope compared her work to Jane Austen’s:

Some compare you to Jane Austen. Others suggest that you write middlebrow fiction masquerading as something more serious. How would you define your writing?
Liam Holland, Ipswich

Well, they shouldn’t. The comparison to Jane Austen makes me fidget. There is a huge gulf between being great and being good. I know exactly which category I fall into and which she falls into. They are not the same. On a good day, I might be good. I think of my writing as contemporary accessible fiction and it really isn’t for me to add the qualifying adjectives. The word “masquerading” tells me more about the person using it than about the quality of my writing.

Ooooh. Burn! (And quite Jane-worthy, we think!)

Aishwarya Rai to appear on Letterman

Sify.com reports that Aishwarya Rai, star of Bollywood’s BRIDE AND PREJUDICE, will appear on David Letterman to promote the movie.

The interview, to be aired on the 9th of February, comes two days ahead of the US premiere of Rai’s film Bride and Prejudice. The Emmy Award-winning programme marks Rai’s first appearance on an American late night talk show.

The former Miss World was last month profiled on CBS networks 60 Minutes programme with an interview taped in Mumbai.

However, this time, Rai will be seated on stage at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City to chat with Letterman about her first English-language movie. Bride and Prejudice, directed by NRI director Gurinder Chadha of the Bend it Like Beckham fame, puts a Bollywood spin on the Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice. The film also stars actor Martin Henderson, Naveen Andrews and Anupam Kher.

Once again this Cub Reporter wishes she would have sprung for that DVR.
