Jeopardy answer

Filed under: Jane in the News — Julie B. @ 6:01 pm

Last week, this Jeopardy answer was given as part of the Title Characters category:

Jane Austen described this 20-year-old as “handsome, clever, and rich.”

Alas, one of the contestants answered, “Who is Mr. Rochester?” I’m sure the gentle readers of AustenBlog can do much, much better.

  1. Miss_Elisabeth Says:

Jane never describes her men as clever………..lol

  2. Mags Says:

    Was Rochester described as handsome?

  3. Monique C Says:

At first, I imagined it was Mr Darcy, as he fits the description :-D, until I remembered that Darcy is 28 years old. :)

  4. Mary Says:

    Is it Emma?

  5. Mags Says:

It is indeed Miss Woodhouse, from the (brilliant) first line of Emma:

Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.

Just as good, though perhaps not as well known, as the line about single men of good fortune. :-)

Actually, all of Jane’s novels have pretty good openings. They put you right into the story.

  6. Mags Says:

And another thing–how is Mr. Rochester a “Title Character?”

  7. Julie B. Says:

Well, I’m sure the contestant was rushed and thought about the “character” part of the category name, not the “title” part.
