Irvine Welsh, author of TRAINSPOTTING: Friend of Jane

According to Scotsman.com, Irvine Welsh, the author of gritty urban novels such as TRAINSPOTTING, revealed to an academic writing a book on his work that his major literary influences include Jane Austen, Sir Walter Scott, and George Eliot.

“They’re still to me, the greatest books ever written by English novelists.

“If you can take it almost as a sort of canon, on the whole they’ve been such a powerful, devastating influence on literature, British literature, European literature.”

The Editrix suddenly feels less lonely amongst her fellow Janeites with her collection of heavy metal CDs.
