Former First Lady: Friend of Jane

The Houston Chronicle reports that Literary Advance of Houston is planning an auction January 27, which will feature the favorite books of 335 public figures, each one signed by that person. Former First Lady, Barbara Bush, chose Pride and Prejudice as her favorite.

Perhaps she identifies with Elizabeth, as both women are said to be mixtures of sweetness and archness.

I’m seeing her as more of a Lady Catherine type, myself. ;-)

  2. Robyn Says:

Mags I disagree, I do not see Barbara as a Lady Catherine, but more as a Mrs. Norris, with a splash of Mrs. Jennings thrown in for good measure. She has the calculating ways of Mrs. Norris, but the unaffected benevolence of Mrs. Jennings.

I am lucky enough to have met Barbara Bush on several occasions. Yes, she is shrewd. That is a given. But she is also a delightful woman whose company I enjoyed very much. She is nothing at all like Mrs. Norris. Being shrewd does not make you evil. Mrs. Norris is evil.
