BRIDE AND PREJUDICE tops U.K. and Ireland box office charts

So much for the mixed reviews and the allegations that the Jane Austen “craze” has passed (yes, Harvey “John Thorpe” Weinstein, we’re looking at you, even though you did back this horse). BRIDE AND PREJUDICE, a Bollywood reworking of Pride and Prejudice directed by Gurinder Chadha, who also directed BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, was the number one release over the past weekend in the U.K. and Ireland. Variety (via Yahoo!) reports that the film helped Sony International pass the $1 billion mark for the third consecutive year.

Meanwhile, the reviews are still thick on the ground.

Reuters thinks the film is “like an Elvis Presley musical from the ’60s, filled with shiny bright colors, bouncy music and happy, smiling, pretty people.”

Ham and High says, “This is noisy and colourful fun, but may not be for the Austen purist.”

Sky Movies says it is “mildly entertaining.”

Glamsham.com says the film is ” delicious, walloping and wacky,” but don’t confuse it with the “real” Jane Austen.
