BRIDE AND PREJUDICE premieres in London
Lots of BRIDE AND PREJUDICE premiere stories tonight. Reviews so far are mixed, though no one seems to think it deviates overmuch from the original. The Scotsman describes the spectacle of the premiere:
Tonight the premiere of the film in London’s West End opened with an ensemble of Indian dancers who took to the stage before the movie began.
The Palladium was decked out in Indian fabrics and fairy lights and the stars walked up a pink carpet instead of the usual red one.
Director Chadha said she felt intense pressure following the success of Bend It Like Beckham, which launched the Hollywood career of Keira Knightley.
Wearing a cream sari she said: “There was an extreme amount of pressure to deliver something that people will really like.”
She said about the movie, which has had mixed reviews: “I think the most important thing about making a film is that you’re happy with it. It’s not a masterpiece, but it is a lot of fun.
“It’s very true to Jane Austen and the spirit of the book, and I think if she came down and went to see it in her local Odeon, she would like it.”
The Beeb has an article about the premiere with a nice photo of Aishwarya Rai and Martin Henderson. Best line of the evening, from Gurinder Chadha:
Once I started adapting the novel, I was convinced Jane Austen was Indian in a previous life.
Heh.
