Budget-priced BBC DVD collection includes Jane Austen adaptations

BBC Video is launching its new line of affordably-priced DVDs with a collection of six Jane Austen adaptations from the 1970s and 1980s.

BBC Video vp Burton Cromer said the company hopes to attract a whole new audience to these titles with their release at an attractive pricing. While many of the female, slightly older-skewing viewers who make up the core audience for such programs on PBS now have DVD players, BBC is counting on other groups such as college-age viewers and families to further boost sales.

Cromer admitted BBC isn’t looking at “huge” sales numbers in comparison to the “Spider-Mans” and “Finding Nemos” of the world. But to date, the Jane Austen adaptations have sold nearly half a million copies as double-VHS sets over the course of a decade — not exactly a pittance.

The Austen titles — “Sense and Sensibility,” “Emma,” “Mansfield Park,” “Persuasion,” “Pride and Prejudice” and “Northanger Abbey” — will be available as a set for hard-core fans at a suggested price of $59.98, and by individual title.

All the appearance of goodness

The Swedish (thanks, Cairbre!) photo site that is linked in an earlier post has added some photos of costumed cast members, including the ones we formerly linked to on KeiraWeb.com and some new ones of Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland as Mrs. and Mr. Bennet. Click on “Nasta” to get to the next photo in the album.

In other P&P3 filming news, the Internet Movie Database is listing Rupert Friend as portraying Mr. Wickham. Rupert also has a role in the upcoming Johnny Depp film THE LIBERTINE. There are links to photos of Rupert from that film on Oh Johnny!, a Johnny Depp fan site. Click here for another good photo of Rupert.

“The Jane Austen Book Club” film rights optioned

Lindsey writes to tell us that Sony Pictures Entertainment has optioned the film rights to The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler. John Calley, the producer attached to the project, is also producing the film version of The DaVinci Code.

“Optioning” film rights doesn’t mean that a film will definitely get made, just that the studio has the rights to make the film for the time frame that they optioned (usually it’s a year or two); however, judging from the linked article, it seems that Mr. Calley is interested in producing book adaptations, and since the book has been quite popular, the prospect is bright of seeing a film version. We are quite fond of the book and are keeping our fingers crossed.

Thanks for the heads-up, Lindsey!
